Hello!

Our 10.16 site (not yet up to 10.17, soon to be :-) experiences a high registration activity from the USA and emerging countries from spammers.

To fight this, I would like to suggest two countermeasures:

1. If the admin decides to use this new feature, all new accounts are registered in blocked/suspended mode, whatever, with the option of sending mail to admin upon user registration requesting admin to confirm account manually. The admin may then contact the potential new user to ascertain the good intention of the user, or, based upon recent experience of what's characteristic of spammers accounts, e.g. very random characters in the user name, simply deleting the account (-s).

2. Offering admins the opportunity to define what countries can register in what way.

Potential new users could be grouped according to geolocation; and offered different categories of registrering:

- Primary geographic area: Immediate, and complete.
- Others: As suggested in 1.

1. Admin vetting of new accounts has been a feature of Web Wiz Forums for over 10 years. If you wish to have the forum admin vet new accounts you can enable this feature from the email settings page within the forums admin area.

2. Geolocation databases are very expensive and usually require expensive subscriptions for the Geolocation databases and components installed on the server.

This is why when you click on the IP address to lookup information such as the location it takes you to our network-tools.webwiz.net website in order that it uses our Geo IP databases subscription rather than you having to purchase your own subscription which typically costs many hundreds of dollars a year.

1. I did not notice - and I did indeed search quite a while looking for this feature, primarily in the security and registration sections. Now I know where - thanks, Bruce! :-) We have added a geoloction moderation function to register.asp, so the need for moderation of all new user registrations is (hopefully!) somewhat lower now.

2. I believe that geolocation databases can be quite inexpensive, at least for low-intensity use such as from within register.asp for most sites, with at least up to 2 registrations per second allowed for free.

IPInfoDb.com is the provider we are currently using. They provide a simple API interface, requiring prior registration providing an API key and for geolocation calls, offering free service to one IP server IP address. It resembles the requirements to enable Stop Forum Spam feature in WebWiz forum, where we have to register with StopForumSpam to get the API key.

In addition there are four geolocation-information databases accessible from http://ipinfodb.com/ip_database.php, providing different granularities of geolocation accuracy, ranging from "country only" via country-region-city down to longitude/latitude and ZIP code.

As far as I can see, this other option should be optimal for heavier multi-site installations, and I suppose that hosting providers may include this into their own solutions.

Best,

Arna.

We have now created a new feature of Web Wiz Forums that can check the IP location of IP4 and IPv6 addresses and if in the admin defined country block list will block new registrations from that country.

We have created our own cloud based service to provide the information for the IP location.

This will be part of Web Wiz Forums 10.18.
