Hey there,

I'm helping to restore a site after the owner's passing. It was an older (but still active) site running on webwiz forums.

I was able to get what i believe to be a full backup of the server. It's got a httpdocs directory full of .asp files and subdirectories, and there's a .mdb file which seems to contain the database in there as well.

The rub is, I've only worked on linux servers (usually with mysql/mariadb databases), and i'm guessing most of this is pretty old! (Though all was working fine.)

Does anyone have any pointers as to how to get this running again? Is it a scenario where I can just drop it into a windows server and it should run, or should I expect a decent amount of configuration? (Not sure what versions the old server was running.) Does the database just run out of this mdb file on the filesystem, or in an application running in the background?

Also—though i'm guessing it would be about the same level of effort as the database would have to be running—it'd probably be OK to just have it running in a read-only state as a sort of archive.

Any pointers, questions, etc would be appreciated!

With a .mdb file it sounds like you have the Access databases version.

You should be able to just drop the files on to a Windows Server and they should run, as long as Classic ASP support is enabled as well as support for Access. The folder holding the Access database also requires write permissions.

If you can not find a Windows Server with Classic ASP and Access database support you could use one of our Windows Web Hosting Packages at the link below which do support Classic ASP and Access databases;
