Topic: 30 minute time zones Posted: 29 August 2003 at 10:49pm |

I'm writing to request that a future edition of WWF allows those of use who live in time zones that are suffixed with :30 (e.g. Darwin and Adelaide in Australia).
Thanks for a great product.

I think a better idea would be to have a drop down list of all the time zones like windows so people just have to pick where they are.

The problem with ASP is that you can not get GMT times, the only time available in ASP is the server time.
This means the only solution is to set the time off-set from the server time.
If GMT times were available then yes you would be able to have time zones like you set in windows, but without a set base time like GMT it is not possible without making a sepprate forum version for each time zone in the world.

Understood. But why not just make the available forum offset times in half hours intervals?

Beacuse there are only 7 time zones in the world that are in hlaf hours, to also add them would make the drop down list for server off-set massive and confusing having to have:
0 0.30 1 1.30 2 2.30 3 3.30
etc. etc. etc. etc.
If you are going to go that far what about those people living in China that are 5 and 3/4 hours ahead of GMT.

If you set the offset time to minutes rather than hours, then it should be possible to offset the time to any time zone.
Or you could have the admin set the time zone for the forum and use it as a base for the other time zones.

hmm, how do other forums do it then?
What if you grab a list of those possible time zones, and have an admin setting, where you can specify which time zone the forum is in. Shouldn't be too hard to then calculate apply offsets from that..
(I didn't know there were only 7 1/2 hour zones. Learn something every day!)
