I hope some of you guys can tell me about if the native IIS6 HTTP compression is of any good compressing Javascript files?

I know it does a good job on HTML and even dynamic pages, but not sure how it behaves when it gets a Javascript file.

The reason I ask is that I have a JS file that occupies now almost 30 KB, I can compress it with a compression utility and that will go down to about 8 KB, but since I need to constantly change the functions inside the JS file, I would prefer to leave it uncompressed, however it would be nice if IIS compression can squeeze it reasonably before sending, does anyone know?

Well IIS compression isnt supported properly by default, so I assume you have enabled it fully by reading either a microsoft article or a third party one.

I think if you edit the metabase you can select what type of files are compressed. You could just renaming it .html although this could create some problems.

There is also a product from port80software (google it) that gives you a nice GUI

Yes, I have edited the metabase last year if I'm not mistaken, anyway, it's properly set to compress most files, including dynamic files, and it's compression is set to 9 on a [0 - 10] scale, as it gives the best compromise.

What I need to know is how well does it compress a .js file?
