The reason for this limit is because many databases have a 255 character limit on some database types, and BBcodes increase the size of your signature.

Using a different datatype to hold more data reduces performance and increases server load due to the underlying way DBMS's work.

great answer, boRg, however, let's say that we run SQL, and will probably always run SQL, is there a limit in MS SQL 2005 or later, and if not, is there a way to manually increase that limit with a file edit, knowing what we are doing on our own forum?
I understand your default limit and it's probably wise, but what about an individual?
Does SQL have such a limit with that sort of field?

No it's not just Access this effects. Larger field types should always be avoided where possiable.

If you do some searching on Google there is lots of papers on DBMS performance.
