I'm trying to install 2 versions of windows. I have windows xp home edition bundled with software but only on a recovery partition. I want to install a version of Windows with IIS. I have copies of  Windows 2000 (which i dont really want), and preferably windows Server 2003, or xp pro. How can i install both of these on my computer so that when i want to be able to switch between the windows so that i can do everyday computing and IIS work. when i do a recovery to put the original XP home on, and then another OS, it give me a loader but when i try to load xp home it says it's missing some file ( if u need the exact message let me know). any suggestions.

You need to create separate partitions and install each OS on one partition. Google the term: dual boot and find a tutorial that can provide you with steps on how to do this. There are tons of tutorial out there.

Another option which I tend to use and is much better for development as you can roll back the OS by taking snap shoots is to install Windows 2000 as a virtual OS ontop of XP.

The free VmWare server is ideal for this, you just install it in XP then you can install Win 2k as a virtual server.

This way you cam also have both OS's running at the same time and are able to access and use both.

By using this we have been able to reduce the number of servers in our office down to 1 server which now runs:-


Small Business Server
Win 2008 x86
Win 2008 x32
Win 2003 x64
Win XP Pro

All from the one computer and all running at the same time!

Please mind it before installing dual boot, it normally slows down the PC speed too. Also you should be careful while installing the programs on which operating system you need them, so that they can work properly.

That is very true.. you will get conflicting programing which will case your hardrive to crash and lose all data..

Ummm huh? No.

Its a "Virtual" operating system. It doesn't conflict with the running OS in any way.

I have to agree with Bruce, a virtual desktop would be much better to use.
