Is classic ASP dead?

I've spent a lot of time lately setting up a new website and I've chosen ASP as the main structure.  Is this a waste of time and should I consider updating to a newer technology?  I am having a hard time understanding ASP.NET or PHP and ASP just seems simpler, however, I don't want to waste too much time building a site based on a dying technology.  Will classic ASP be around for a while or should I just suck it up and learn something else now?

ASP is gonna be gone by the end of this year, all systems will cease to function. Just kidding. I am sure ASP will be around for quite some time to come as there are just too many systems still running it. The next version of Windows "Longhorn Server" will still support ASP natively and this OS will likely be supported for at least 8 years from release, which puts us around 2015. By that time I am sure you will be able to convert most your stuff to asp.net 8.0 or whatever the current version then will be. Maybe the web will be all gone by then cause we have been taken over by the Borg... no not the admin of this site one ....

I believe Michael is correct. I've been using it exclusively since 1998 and am finding it difficult to switch (only because I don't WANT to switch) to dot net.
 
You can imagine my surprise when I upgrade VisualStudio to 2003 and there was no longer any libraries for classic asp and the new free studio doesn't include it either. I still use VisualInterdev sometimes just for the reference material.
 
But to your point, ASP is here for a while. I will likely make the move to asp.net once 2.0 is more widely supported by hosting companies. I have a PILE of customer functions and tools I've got to upsize so I'm really not looking forward to the prospect of migration. But in this industry, we have to evolve or starve.

When you consider when it came out, and compare it to MS's announced plans, it appears that asp has gone though about 60% of it's known supported by MS life.

There's a pretty substantial code base built up and the betting is that if MS drops support, the libraries will either go to open source of be reverse engineered by 3rd parties.

The asp library is basically an IIS DLL. Nothing to stop web hosting companies from registering an using the old dll as long as dll's are supported and as long as a windows web server supports the calls made by the asp dll.

If you configure IIS as your VS2005 server instead of using the built in one, you still have asp.

Lead me not into temptation... I know the short cut, follow me.

I used the wrong term DP... sorry. The library I was talking about is the MS Books that come in Interdev. The documentation (should been how I wrote the first time) is why I continue to use VS6. Sorry 'bout that.
 
But you are correct... I'm sure we will see remnants of classic asp well beyond 2015.
