Most likely a bit of a dumb question, but here goes....

In order to learn jsp, do I really need to know Java ??? I'm hoping that it's kind of similar to asp in that you dont have to know how to develop COM.

Well, it's quite different then asp. Maybe C# would get closer. It looks abit like Javascript, but just look for a tutorial, and its easy.

I don't use it, because Java, and JSP, really ***** in my opinion. Why do you want to use JSP if you can use ASP?

It's so much a case of 'wanting' to move over to JSP.....

I work as an intranet application programmer for a major software company and have been told to move away from MS technologies in favour of Linux and Java/JSP .

Having said that, after initially being extremely pi$$ed off by the move, I'm now being a lot more positive - some additional skills to add to my CV !!! Also, it's not like I have a choice in the matter (especially in todays economic environment).

It does add's some use(full/less) stuff to your CV, yes.

Maybe you should have a word with your boss, or something. If you can't, well, use PHP instead of JSP. PHP is a bit easier and faster then JSP. Although *.jsp looks better, it works really crappy.

You sometimes have to write tonn's of code, to get the content of a file or database. Since I'm quite lazy, this is one of the reasons why I choose ASP.NET using VS.NET.

But, if you're one of the few remaining die-hard programmers, enjoy..

Hey, I don't think we are the decider, that's our clients. Yes, you can use ASP or PHP event JSP for an easy making site. But if your client request CGI, s..., because of their system, what you will do? Your clients and your opposites don't give you their time. Oki?

I think we have to need all those tools but not require to become an express.
