Large Disk Error Checking.

I'm working on several file servers with 1.5 TB Arrays on them. We have been running into some disk error problems, and I was going to run chkdsk on them, but chkdsk requires disk locking. We can't afford to have these file servers down for that long of a period of time. Does anyone have any ideas or experience with alternatives? What do you do to defragment/error repair your large RAID drives?
