it shouldn't be too bad of a run... it's like under a stairwell and into my garage and up through the ceiling

The trick to cabling is that you don't want to make it to long either and that will increase collisions and delay as well. Ideally, it's "Just right".

Also, when running the cable, most will advise that you keep it away from other electrical runs. You should also keep it away from metal plumbing.

Lead me not into temptation... I know the short cut, follow me.
