First - Backup your entire database before you attempt anything

To move from Access to SQL Server you need to use the Upsize wizard found in MS Access to upsize the Access database to SQL Server.

You also need to have SQL Server installed on the local network to do this (the free Express Edition is good for this). Then when you upsize the database choose to have Access create a new database when upsizing.

Once the database is upsize if you need to move the SQL Server database to that of your web host you should create a backup of the database (.bak file) then use this to restore the database on your web hosts server. If you try to export/import the data you often loose important parts of the database schema, so you should use the database backup method to move your database

Had good results with Access 2007, but it will not upsize to a SQL Server 2008 database, you need to be using SQL Server 2005.

My SQLServer version is hosted online but I dont seem to have ftp access to the database. The install is all working but the database is new and so empty. Do you have a tool to copy the data from the access database to the SQL Server database? The import utility only gets the members unless I am mistaken.

The reason why SQL Server is much better than Access is unlike Access where you have a physical file you upload and download with SQL Server you connect to the database server to manage your database.

To move data from an Access database to an SQL Server database you can use the upsize wizard in Access to do this, but it will only work with a local network SQL Server. In your case you will probably need to buy a commercial tool that can migrate your Access database from Access to the remote SQL Server database.

Moving your forum database from Access to SQL Server is not something to be taken lightly. You maybe lucky and it only takes 15 minutes, but in many cases even our own engineers that do this on almost a daily biases and know the Web Wiz Forums database schema inside out can take up to 8 hours to do and get it right.

For this reason many people who move their Web Wiz Forums installation from Access to SQL Server move their hosting to us and then let us upsize their Access database to SQL Server for them as part of our migration service.
