Hi all,

I'd like to be able to monitor our internet usage at work, and see which computers in the network are using what amount of bandwidth, and on what ports etc.

We have two ADSL lines going through two ADSL routers, into a WatchGuard X550e, through HP switches and off into each PC / Mac.

We also have two Windows 2003 servers, and a CentOS box connected on the network.

How would I be able to monitor bandwidth on a user / PC / Mac level?

Cheers,

Oli

We use SNMP to measure the bandwidth going through the NIC or the switch/firewall ports to monitor various servers and network bandwidth.

Windows has an SNMP service built into the OS which can be enabled and most switches and firewalls also support SNMP.

You just need some software to read in the values and compile them in some way that ledgeable. We use PRTG Traffic Grapher, but there are plenty of others that do a similar job.

ProteMac is more for a single user type scenario. It would be no good in a coporate or multi user/node enviroment where you need to measure network traffic across switches, hardware firewalls as well as workstation nics as MortiOli needs.

For this type of thing you need to use SNMP which most corporate style switches support as well as most OS's. All HP switches that I have come across support the SNMP protocol as well as firewalls like WatchGard.

It's just a case then of choosing software that can record the traffic flow that is gathered using the SNMP protocol.

In the end I upgraded the WatchGuard to the latest XTM version, which supplied the info we needed.  Cheers!
