new members aren't always in "new member group".

my forum is brand new.  i have my "new member group" set to "newbie".  i also have created a group that only the administrator can add members to that i'm calling "employees".  people joining my forum sometimes become "employees" somehow without becoming "newbies".  I've checked my settings over and over and i'm not sure what's wrong.  Some of the time it works and people who join get added to my "newbie" group, but sometimes they get added to a group that only I can add people to.

 

does anyone have any advice for me?
