New Post Icons not updating

I have noticed in my forum that when I log out and back in, the new post icon (star) does not update to show me new posts when I log back in. By accident, I found out that it only updates when I post a new message or a reply, then eveything updates to show me the new posts.  Any ideas?  Hopefully this is not another stupid question on my part.
 
I have duplicated this with various users and I can't figure out where the problem lies. The New posts page and Unansered posts page works properly, but the main forum icons will not change unless I reply to someone or post a new item.
 
New message e-mails are working properly. BTW, the same thing happens on this forum, here at webwiz.

You know - you're not stupid - I have discussed this before on our forums as well as PM's -

I believe it is do with how the cookies are stored, but I'm sure someone will come along and refresh my memory too
I always use New Posts to have a look, so I do not really even look for the star bit, but someone will have the right answer LOL

I would have to classify this as a minor bug then. On most forums I visit, the new post icons stay up until you read them or mark them all read.  I'll have to warn my users on this. Thanks for the reply.  I always assume I'm doing something dumb that has a solution, hence the stupid comment.
