Is it possible to make a page that can only be viewed as a popup window (meaning: if somone knows the URL of that window they would not be able to just open it, but would have to use my site to get to it)?

maybe with use of a session variable. if it exists - the page opens. otherwise it redirects to a main/login page or something

I would suggest using a cookie as a session variable adds additional overhead to the web server, but you should be sure to delete the cookie when the pop-up window closes.
