The Password recovery email doesn't arrive for some reason. Had users complain about it. I tried with my own account and it failed. The strange thing is that other email notifications work. For instance, new users get the email activation email. And I've received the "Issue With Post ..." type emails where users report spam. I'm using the CDOSYS module, which I assume all of the ASP code uses for email sending.

I can telnet to the SMTP server from the forums server (windows 2003 server). So SMTP access is fine - plus like I said, other types of email go through - just not the lost password feature.

I'm running 7.9

Any ideas how to troubleshoot this?

Unless you have a corrupted file which is the problem, then I can't see why the forgotten password email would not go through as they are sent using the same email function.

Try reuploading the files again first and see if that solves the problem.

I'll give that a shot, but don't believe I modified the forgotten_password.asp file. So it should be the original code.

What's also odd is that it says "Your new password has been emailed to you." when I perform the password recovery.

I thought the SendMail function had some error checking and would report an error if the email didn't get sent? I would expect an error of some sort.

Files often become corrupted during FTP upload, which is the most common course of problems, which is why I suggested to upload the files again.

If you have access to the mail servers queue, then it maybe worth checking that an email is actually relayed onto the SMTP server, if it is then you know the problem is not with the Web Wiz Forums software.

Upgrading to version 8 may also solve the problem, as version 8.

Figure out the problem. though seems odd.
My forum name was: VoIP Forum (Termination, Origination, Voice over I
which is placed in the strWebsiteName variable

I didn't notice the name was cutoff due to a limited number of characters for the website name, but ignoring that for a second, check out what the problem was:

In forgotten_password, the original code was this:
blnEmailSent = SendMail(strEmailBody, decodeString(strUsername), decodeString(strEmailAddress), strWebsiteName, decodeString(strForumEmailAddress), strSubject, strMailComponent, false)

I changed it - I substituted thestrMessage with a short string:
blnEmailSent = SendMail(strEmailBody, decodeString(strUsername), decodeString(strEmailAddress), "VoIP Forums", decodeString(strForumEmailAddress), strSubject, strMailComponent, false)

and then it worked.

Any idea why VoIP Forum (Termination, Origination, Voice over I is illegal?

I think the other email send functions don't use strWebsiteName which is why they worked, but the password recovery did not.

Very odd, I'm glad you found what the course of the problem was as it would have been impossible to guess that this is the issue without debugging on your system.

It maybe some limitation with the email component that you are using.

Maybe. Though I'm using Windows 2003 for the forums and the SMTP server is also Windows 2003 with Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 SP2. Pretty standard stuff.

Well, if inspired or just curious, try changing one of your non-production forums to the same name I used and then try the password recovery feature.

Though you may have a totally different setup/different O/S than me. Unless there is some global SMTP limitation or bug that is on all SMTP servers.

Would be pretty cool if I found it. Tongue
