It would be nice if we had some plugin snappoints to make it easier for those of us who modify the forum software to add additional features.  It would be simple to implement and give us a lot more flexibility without having to hack the existing base code.

This could be done by:
  1. Creating ASP files for each snappoint in their own directory.
  2. Including those files at the snappoint in the main code.
  3. During the upgrade process, not overwriting those files (or at least asking first).

Some places I would like to see snappoints:

  1. Directly above the first forum post in a topic.
    • This is useful if you want to integrate the forums with the rest of the site.  For example, you can have forum topics that talk specifically about a recipe or article located on a different part of the site.  You can create code that links the forum post with a specific recipe or article, and display something before the forum post.
    • It also can be used to ask for additional information from the author after the post is created, or from users who are reading the post.  For example, if someone wants to create a reviews type post, code could be added to that snappoint that asks people to rate products or services (similar to how a poll displays above the discussion).
    • Also could be used for advertising if someone so chooses.
  2. Directly below the posts on a page.
    • This would probably be most useful for related posts or related articles type plugin.
    • Could also be used as a place for advertising.
  3. Directly above the list of topics in a forum.
    • Useful if you want to show information summarizing what the forum is about, or drawing attention to specific rules for a particular forum area.  Also can be used to integrate the forums with another section of the website.  For example, the recipe forum could be integrated with the recipe section of the website.
    • Could also be used as a place for advertising or sponsors.
  4. Incorporated into the Member Profile (perhaps below the default info.).
    • This would allow the creation of extended profiles from information not stored in Web Wiz Forums tables.  For example, a developer could create a table holding an extended profile using the member ID as the key, and then create code to show that on the member profile at the snappoint.  For example, you could list articles or recipes the person has submitted in another part of the website listed as part of their profile.
  5. On posts, below the information about the author of the post.
    • Additional information about the user can be displayed here, similar to how information can be incorporated into the member profile.  Ideal for adding icons for the member's social media accounts, or additional profile information, or flags of where a person is from, etc.
  6. On posts, directly below the signature block.
    • This would allow alternatives to freeform signatures, or can be used as a supplement.  For example, specific profile information (stored in Web Wiz Forums or in a separate table outside Web Wiz Forums structure), to be included below posts in a uniform fashion.  It could also be used to add social media icons, links to articles a person wrote elsewhere on the website, etc.

Doing something like this would make it easier for people to upgrade the forums, since they do not have to re-add the mods they added.  And it would make Web Wiz Forums more versatile and encourage third party addons that do not modify the core code.
