Subject: Windows Server 2003 display problem

I have just got a copy of Windows Server 2003 Corporate. On one PC it works fine. However on the other when I login explorer.exe starts but does not load the taskbar or icons. I have checked the drive for viruses using the most up to date definition files. When I boot the computer in safe mode it works fine. If I boot the computer in last good configuration it also works as the last good configuration was the installation. How can I get explorer to work?

If you boot up in last known good configuration and it works fine what's your problem? Surely next time it boots up it uses the settings from last known good configuration?

I would think so to but it doesn't seem to be working that way.

isn't CORPORATE the illegal versions?

No, corporate is a version for corporations that does not require you to phone up MS and activate it... Because of this piraters try to crack this version

Just a thought...

I've been told that W2K3 installs components based upon the usage of the machine. - e.g. you don't get the IE browser, solitaire, etc., if you configure the install for a MSSQL server, but you do get the IR browser probrammable object.

Why wouldn't explorer work because of this though? I am thinking this error must be fixable as it worked fine straight away on my other PC.

Why not try and contact MS Support (assuming you have paid for the product and support for it)

My thought there was that you might have been configuring it for a different purpose than the other PC.

Some of the schemes used by software companies involve checking the network to see if the license key is already installed, so you may want to try taking one or both PC's off of your network.

Other schemes involve checking a corporate license list or visiting MS during the install for license verificaton.

Just haven't played with W2K3 that much to offer anything other than straws to grasp. The suggestion to contact MS is probably your best bet.  You may also want to check out http://www.labmice.net - http://www.labmice.net  or one of the other win suppot sites. Another place to check would be your video card manufactures site as there have been problems in the past with ie button displays on certain cards.

Just re-read the original post. Try setting the vid card at 640x460x256. If the buttons display, work up from there.

Amen. Thing is that even most corporations do not get hands on a corp edition only with special contracts. But who am I to doubt

i think you need to get over 1000 licences for the corporate version... i doubt Huw spent 3/4 of a million dollars on windows server software

When I was installing and testing the other PC was off. I will try booting up in last good configuration and change the screen resoultion.

Ok I am writing this message from Windows Server 2003 Safe mode with networking!
There seems to be a problem with something conflicting.
Here is a pic. It is only temporary and will be deleted when everyone has seen it.

Does the same machine work ok with another version of windows instaleld? If not try to reinstall windows/reconfigure hardware.

disable the devices listen in the conflicting device list... i don't think you have the correct drivers installed for your VGA controller

you can also try installing the VGA controller and then reinstalling it... sometimes it doesn't update the drivers if you upgrade

The via chipset had some problems a while ago with agp cards. I recall having to update both my Asus bios and my Via chipset to get stable video on XP.

Yes I have XP on the machine to.
The problem is that I could reinstall the drivers from the disk. The problem is it uses its own setup file. It thinks my server is Windows NT. When I put on compatibility for XP it still does not work. Any ideas in how to trick it?

It appears that the devices were only conflicting in safe mode. I have managed to get the icons and taskbar to come up. However you have to wait 5-15minutes for this to happen. This is not a slow computer and it does not take long to boot up.
