Hi

I am hoping to use your system as a replacement for the Smartgroups.com forums I have been using for the past year. I have a membership of approx 300 member who manage to generate approx +1000 messages a month.

I have tested a number of system. None of which are suitable as most boards lack interactivity. The email system operated by Smartgroups does provide this but it also helps to generate a lot of unnecessary mails. Your system should I hope reduce this problem.

My first suggestion is that you provide a range of post notification options to members allowing them to select which forums they wish to subscribe to via one screen  i.e subscribe to all boards or to individual board by check boxes.

You have included an option to receive copies of all postings posted to individual forums. This is why I have decided to test your system.

On a forum that produces a lot of mail many members don't always know how to handle large quantities of mail. This can be over come by providing a daily digest of posting made to the forum. The layout of the digest is very important so that the reader can follow a thread and contribute if they feel they have something to add. This is Smartgroups main failing. If you could produce a daily digest that could be sent to members displaying the complete thread plus a reply link this IMHO would put your system far above any other system available.

I wish you the greatest success with your venture.

Gareth

I doubt you will find any forum that does such a thing as it would be very difficult to setup and program.

I am planning to make a page that displays all forums and topics a member has subscribed to so that they can select to unsubscribe if they no-longer whish to receive email notification for that topic of forum.

Maybe a faeture on that page would be to also subscribe to forums, or all forums.

Hi

I just noticed a problem. The reply notice I receive notifying me of a reply to my email had in the subject field 'Web Wiz Forums Forum Post Notification.  On a heavy use board this would result in hundreds of notices all with the same subject field. Making it impossible to use mail rules client side to sort different subject matters.

In reply to your previous mail. I have found one forum that is using perl. That offers a daily digest and the format of their digest is OK. But I can't locate the source of their perl scripts.

I hope you will think about how to handle large(r) mail quantities. As I said the interactivity this option supplies to a static board make all the difference between success and failure of Forum. IMHO.

Thank you for your reply

Gareth

Pearl runs in a different way to ASP. With pure ASP you can't have things that are triggered to run automactically at set times, therefore if a message digest function where to be included it would require that it manually be sent each day, defeating the object of having it.

Hi

I see that a time setting would then be out.

What about a threshold setting.

1. When a new message is received and it is the Rule 5th 10th 50th 100th the message since the last digest.

2. When a new message is received and more than Rule 50k 100k 250k 500k of messages have been sent since the last digest.

I can't really see much call for such an option, as you are the only person to ever mention such a thing in over two years.

It's more of a custom option that you require, so I think your best option would be coding it in yourself.

Hi

The digest option was for your reference.

The other problem mentioned.

'Subject field 'Web Wiz Forums Forum Post Notification.'

Is more of a pressing problem for me. Is a mod possible to have the subject field include the original message title or again is this a major problem.

If this is a DIY job can you tell me which files are involved. Please.

Gareth

Just edit the post_message.asp file.
