hi all

i'm using the 6.28 version with, i believe, the MS SQL (though an .mdb Access file does open and keep info - so is that Access and maybe not MS SQL?) for about 18 months.  the average number of posts in the forum is about 20,000-30,000, which are deleted every month.  there are about 8000 registered users, though the number of actual active users is lower.

recently, the SQL admin of our web hosting notified me that the SQL machine is being exhausted by our forum, as there appear to be either multiple connections to the SQL opening for each user, or that the connections do not close appropriately.

i wanted to know:

1. is this bug known and maybe has a fix, or should i upgrade the forum altogether to the latest version.

2. if so, are the 6.28 or the 7.8 versions built to handle the usage load i described above?

3. does the MS SQL 7.8 version use caching (my SQL guy told me to ask that)?

thank you,

rany

You should upgrade to the latest version as version 7.x does greatly improve performance by using less recordset and database objects.

You should also upgrade for security reasons as awell.

If you have an Access .mdb file, then you are using the Access version. Access uses a great deal of server resources as it is a flat file system.

The MS SQL server version 7.8 would increase peformance a great deal as it uses less database objects, stored procedures, application level variables to reduce database calls, and many other performance enhancing features.

if i want to start using the MS SQL version instead of the Access one, how can i keep my users database (it's an .mdb file)?

run the mssql server setup file on the server and ask your host to move the data from the access db to the sql server db

What's the file size of the access .mdb?

You need to download the MS SQL server version of Web Wiz Forums, the ms_sql_server_setup.asp file is part of that package.

in regards to getting data from access to SQL database,

there are lots of posts regarding this . i have replied to lots already. but if your host is a nice one, ask them if they can upsize the access database onto the SQL server

DO this one first before the below as you will have to wait for the upsize

in regards to the ms sql set up file

if you are using the upsize wizard method you will need to delete the code in the msSQL_server_setup.asp so only the stored procedures are left else you will get errors

go to the forum and in the address bar write on the end msSQL_server_setup.asp then fill in the details of the SQL server and presto its done.
