They will probably remove some of the security features to do so LOL.

actually just watched a webcast on xp sp2 and SQL Server, mostly bc of the win firewall sql will not be accessible via TCP, port must be explicitely opened or the sql server EXE must be set as an allowed program... Even though this will cause some frustrations of ppl calling "Ican't connect anymore but nothing changed" (forgetting to mention that an SP is a change).

atapi.sys is used for graphics (don't quote me on that) I think, maybe have a play around with your graphics settings

Have a go at booting in Diagnostics Mode by typing in run msconfig and selecting selective start up. Then try and load it and then change it back after.

Diagnostics start up may be better thinking about it.

Just a note, I JUST had the same problem today trying to install SP1, if you have a program called Deamon tools, un-install it, then install SP1 then re-install Daemon tools

Loads of things can create MS patches to hang on installation always shut down TSR software (software that runs in the back of windows) before you run upgrade patches like this or you will get problems.

I downloaded it maybe a day or two ago. Thoughts:
1. It appears to have a hard time recognizing Symantec Corporate Edition virus protection, so I just told the security center I would take care of it.
2. I like the way it prompts you when a program wants to access the internet rather than just squashing it, this gives you an opportunity to grant access to programs that would otherwise just stop working.
3. IE now as pop-up blocking. Are there any other new features in IE?
4. Am I missing any features?

I like the information bar, instead of the Authenticode Active X dialog popping up and disturbing me it just appears in the info bar.

The only thing I don't like about the info bar is when a download is initiated by a META tag (like on download.com) you need to click the info bar then allow, which refreshes the page again and you need to wait for the download to intiate again.

http://www.steampowered.com - Steam wont work with SP2, so screw the whole sh*t

I liked the new wireless thingy in it, which I hardly got the time to test before I had to uninstall it to get Steam to work..

That's a gaming thing right? I have heard many complaints that SP2 is affect gaming aspects.

I'm sure given time that all the conflicts will be worked out.

MS had a list at their SP2 site of programs with problems with it. Most of the workarounds seemed to invlve opening up a port on the MS firewall.

Makes sense on my end. I don't use the firewall that is with Windows XP and SP2, but instead I use a second party firewall program. Maybe this is why I have not experienced any problems so far with SP2.

If it was just that easy...............
It couldn't connect to the server even with a completely open system on two different Internet connections.. but it worked fine with the exactly same settings without SP2.. Don't think Steam was in the list of affected programs either..

I seem to recall that steam had a forum though.... might have something there.

I actually seem to have quite a few problems (that before I did not notice) since installing SP2. First of all it takes ages to shut down the machine (could be the page file thing, have not tested), but Power Schemes do not work. I am unable to save a new Power Scheme, and playing around with it deleted all but two of them (no I did not) now on occasion my start menu quick launch area (the left part of the start menu) is black and if I click something like Start Run, then it says cannot create shortcut here, wanna create on desktop, so I think I got another re-install ahead of me, freakin windows, get's worse then better

why do they have to make such HUGE changes in a f**king service pack?

Posted By: Mart
Date Posted: 31 August 2004 at 10:31am
Probably due to HUGE bugs.

Posted By: Semikolon
Date Posted: 31 August 2004 at 4:41pm
they have corrected most bugs AND made HUGE changes.. changes is OK, but not when it affects compability

Just give it time, either MS or the vendors will no doubt produce fixes

Posted By: Bluefrog
Date Posted: 31 August 2004 at 6:25pm
Yet another reason to NEVER be an early adopter for MS if you actually give a damn about what you are doing. Test boxes that do nothing don't matter... Machines that you need are a different matter...

It seams like Microsoft have a bit of work cut out for them yet before releasing this SP2 but as normal they will just release it all the same and then fix all the bugs.

All in all, I've been pleased with SP2. Put it on 5 machines without a glitch. Everything works except my gmail login, and I suspect that may be googles problem more than SP2's. All machines seem to boot faster as well.

I installed SP2 about two weeks ago now and apart from the new firewall and that it uses up even more memory to boot I don't see any differences at all.
