I like UltraEdit, Visual Studio, and FP2003 - earlier versions of FP should be avoided. Dreamweaver does a lot of bloated code and IMHO. is difficult to get w3c standards compliant code out of.

TextArea is a pretty good nagware editor. A lot of people use HTML Kit which probably has to many add-on features as it seems to be a little sluggish,

This brings up an Important Issue

Ive actually been wondering what would be a good editor to use for W3C Compliant Coding.

???

Notepad is a very good EDITOR if you are going to edit single files and don't need/want syntax higlighting etc

Visual Studio (.Net) is a very good tool for editing complete sites. It has syntax highlighting(both HTML and ASP), search and replace functions (single/multiple/all files), pops up suggestions on methods and tags when you are writing, CSS editor, HTML design editor (), and everything else you need.. but it is quite expensive if you want a legal copy..

ASP.Net WebMatrix is also a good tool (and free). it's made for ASP.Net.. it has syntax highlighting for HTML and ASP.Net, but not ASP, but is better than Notepad. It aslo has a file browser on the left side and a good HTML design editor..

FrontPage should be avoided at all costs, at least earlier versions than 2003. I have not tried the newest version, but people has said it's better on code handling than the others..

Dreamweaver has support for everything and it can auto generate code for you(please avoid!!), but if you write everything yourself in the code editor, it's almost as good as VS.Net (I believe) and much cheaper

but if you want a free one, I'm not quite sure.. ASP.Net WebMatrix is the best I can think of..

write everything yourself in a plain text editor.. don't use design editors EDIT (after I read Gullanian's post): they always screw everything

I am completely anti WYSIWYG.  I only go for text editors, but with highlight features, auto indenters, just simple stuff.  When your making a website you want full control over every aspect on it and I dont want a WYSIWYG editor putting a can of worms in there for me!

I do 99% of everything in EditPlus because it has fantastic syntax highlighting. I've tried UltraEdit, but just don't like it's highlighting.

It is weak in 2 areas, can't do hex, and it's regular expressions are a bit weak, although better than most.

I really like the built in ftp on UltraEdit. Also use it for JSP's, Pearl, and PHP, so it works out to be a pretty good all-around editor for me. - YMMV

I like UltraEdit myself and have written all the applications for this site in UltraEdit.

It has lots of useful features, but doesn't come with built in support for ASP syntax highliting, but if you look on the UltraEdit site there are some good add-ons for ASP syntax highlighting and a good ASP tag bar which is great for not having to keep typing ASP commands.

Both of these can be easily changed yourself by editing the text file for them so you can customise the syntax highliting and the tag list to suit your needs.

The global search and replace tool that can be used on mutiple files in a directory is great and can use regular expressions, it's also got a useful search and find feature along the same lines you just point it at the files in a directory.

It has so many useful features I can't possibly mention them all here, but check it out, you may find it really useful, I know I do.

This is where I get a bit confused about EditPlus and UltraEdit.

Most people I know use UltraEdit, but I just can't find any reason to use it as my primary editor. It mostly boils down to syntax highlighting... EditPlus has far superior syntax highlighting than UltraEdit. Even with add-ins or whatever.

When it comes to regular expressions, UltraEdit is much better, but in that case I either use another program that is again, much stronger with regular expressions than UltraEdit or I use a program I made myself to take care of them, which is again much stronger with regular expressions than UltraEdit.

Reg. exps. in EditPlus are VERY weak. I only use them in there for very basic things.

I rarely ever need to look at HEX views of files, so...

I'm wondering... what is it that everyone loves about UltraEdit? I just can't see it. Seriously... I want someone to let me know what it is that makes UltraEdit so strong.
