Does anyone know of an application that can take a website URL and show a snapshot thumbnail of the site?

Or maybe someone knows a method to go about doing this without needing any installed components, just pure ASP.

Any example is to show snapshots like ICQ Search does.

Found this at Thumbshots.org only thing is that it only pulls pages that are in the DMOZ.

Well manually you could always hit the PrintScreen key to copy the current screen to the Windows clipboard and then paste it as a new image into some image software or even Word.

Yeah that's what I'm doing right now.

The reason I want an automated solution is because I have a links directory and I want to randomly show a link on my front page, but when show I want a solution that will call the url and automatically place a thumbnail of it about the link.

So far the only semi solution is the Thumbshots, but again it only shows a page if it is listed in the DMOZ directory and already cached on their servers.

Interesting project.

If all else fails, why not just make a "Screenshot Not Available" image show if the results aren't listed in the DMOZ directory?  Also, are you able to resize the image on the fly like that or will it just scale the full size image down?  It seems like that might already be a pretty time consuming script (having to wait on page loads from other sites).  You might want to set a short timeout period and have it display the aforementioned "Image not Available" pic if it times out.

Something just occured to me...does it used cached images from the DMOZ directory?  If so, that would speed things up a bit, but not make them very current.

Anyway, I'll keep my eyes and ears open about this.  Good Luck.
