I am thinking of running mozilla firefox as a kiosk. However:

  • Right click can be disabled using javascript
  • Toolbars can be disabled using the browser.xul

However how can you disable keyboard shortcuts?
And more importantly is it possible to only exit firefox when you type in a password?

Have you looked in the documentation?

I think the source is available for it. Haven't looked but check http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/0.9.1/contrib/ - http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/0.9. 1/contrib/  for a source version.

When you have a stall or something like that and you want to show a website to your visitors but not let them go on a differant url etc.

Doesn't IE have a Kiosk system for the full screen mode? Or don't you want to use IE?

I was thinking of using Linux as it is free so obviously IE is not an option. However even the IE kiosk system doesn't password protect itself.

Since you have a closed system, it's all up to you. Use whatever suits your purposes best. FireFox is a nice choice.

If you're running a kiosk, think about designing the site to be keyboardless. In linux, you can route keystrokes to /dev/null. You don't need a keyboard to boot the system.

Try password protecting a directory that onyy contains the exit page - or perhaps an admin menu that allows enabling keyboard, exit, etc..
