I'm wondering if there are plans to add a 'threaded message tree' view.  Perhaps someone has already built an add on module to do just that?

As a long time forum moderator (and now a new user of WWF ) I miss the thread tree that I've found so useful in other forums.  Its a tremendous aid to conversation to know who is replying to whom.

I'd very much appreciate any comments in regard to such a feature.

Tom

Threaded messages forums are a little dated now and most people seem to prefer the flat message board like this one.

Flat message boards work differently to threaded message boards (which I always find difficult to navigate and a pain to find responses), whereby threaded messages boards allow replies to previous posts within the topic making the structure completly different in that style of board.

So most boards are either flat or threaded, trying to make one that does both would lead to incomatibity problems with both.

So the answer is no, there are no plans on making a threaded version of web wiz forums.

Thank you for that info.

Out of curiosity, have you seen the PL script driven webBBS forum?  I'm no fan of CGI but he has built in the ability to construct the page anyway the user likes.  That's no doubt because he stores the data as pure text.

I looked in the database at  tblThread and tblTopic ... All the data necessary to build a thread view is there and I'm wondering how difficult it might be write a 'thread view' that was solely a navigator.  I would conceptualize it in a modeless dialog... you would not open message in that dialog... rather it would provide a quick, tree based view of the threads and messages within those.  You would click on the message that you wanted to view and that page>message would be open>scrolled into view in the parent.

Now that I look again at tblThread though... I don't see any 'parent message' field.... so I guess short of building that in there'd be no way to build the message to message references.

Thanks again for your reply

best
Tom
