Hello,

I have encountered a strange problem.  I have no trouble logging in as Administrator and can perform all the functions except one.  I cannot edit user accounts in the member area.  Each time I click a member, I get the message saying I do not have permissions.  What is going on and how do I fix this?

I would prefer a solution that considers that our forum is live and constantly being updated.

Thanks,

John

have you done any modifications to the forum at all.

Also you didn't say what db version and forum version you are using.

if not try re uploading the register.asp file found in the forum folder.

Make sure you are using the main built in admin account, not a secoundary one you have created yourself.

Also havge you tried editing members profiles from the main forum area? You can do this by selecting a users profile then clicking on the 'edit mebers settings' button at the bottom of the members profile.

This is actually what my original problem was.  I could not access the admin area with the main account.  How do I change the password on the main administrator account with the current problem I have?

Passwords are 160bit encrypted and other accounts can not edit the main admin account (this is probally why you have the permissions error when trying to edit this account).

This is why it does warn you NOT to loose the password to the main admin account or you will be in trouble!!!!

Your only solution is to edit the database directly.
  1. Create a new user that you know the password of.
  2. Open the tblAuther table in the database
  3. Find the new account you have created
  4. Copy and paste the values for the fields 'Password' and 'Salt' to the same fileds found in the main admin account (main admin account is position 1)
  5. You should then be able to log into the main admin account using the new password you created
