"The request cannot be processed while the Web site is restarting"

Anyone know what causes this?  All I could find is that it's something to do with global.asa and sessions, is it due to a max limit of sessions on the server?  What are the most IIS can handle?

Your site could actually be restarting either because of problems within your site or because problems with someone else's site causing an iis restart. Usually clears within a minute or so.

On thng you may want to look at is if you do any I/O out of global.asa. If you do, you need to use Application.Lock and Application.Unlock before and after the I/O to restrict that activity to one user at a time.

Failing to close objects or connections is probably the most common cause of restarts - but they may be on someone else's site, not yours - one of the drawbacks to shared hosting.

Thanks dpyers, the server is dedicated and privatly owned so it's to do with our site.

Could also be a problem with IIS that courses restarts.

As to your question on how many connections IIS can handle, this can be set in IIS on server OS versions, on XP pro it is restrcited to 10 concurrent connections.

Thanks, I think however the most likely cause is database connections not being closed off, the sites quite busy througout the day (a page view about every second).
