I am trying to create an Access 2000 project with an MSDE database.

I have downloaded and extracted MSDE2000 (relA) onto a Win2000 laptop. I have installed a default database with the command:

setup sapwd=mypassword securitymode=sql disablenetworkprotocols=1.

I have opened a new Access project, and got the database wizard. I enter the following details:
SQL Server: NTRL-LAP (the laptop name)
Login ID: sa
Password: mypassword

I get this error message:
Connection failed:
SQLState:'01000'
SQL Server Error:2
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][Shared Memory]ConnectionOpen(Connect()).
Connection failed:
SQLState:'08001'
SQL Server Error:17
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][Shared Memory]SQL Server does not exist or access denied.

Can anyone suggest what I am doing wrong?

It should be:

setup sapwd=mypassword securitymode=sql disablenetworkprotocols=0

well you can leave disablenetworkprotocols at 1 but the you cannot access it from other computers. To fix that though, just go to Start>Programs...>Server Network Utility and add Tcp/IP

Thanks. At the moment I only need to use MSDE on the laptop. However, I have uninstalled MSDE and reinstalled it with:

setup sapwd=mypassword securitymode=sql disablenetworkprotocols=0

I still get the same error though.

It was running, but since then I have uninstalled it, and now I can't install it at all. The installer dialogue opens for a few seconds then closes again.

I am now trying to install msde on a desktop. On this machine, the installation gets to the end, then a pop informs me that Exception Package has no digital signature, and the installation fails and rolls back. The log shows this:
