MSSQL is unavailable to me at this time. Can anyone tell me the performance problems I might expect using Access db and are there future plans for converting this to MySQL?

Problems with Access are that it is slower, but not immediatly aparent, only slows down when you have a few hundred users and a few MB's of MDB filesize.

As for MySQL, there's no plans to add a MySQL backend version of WWF because, see this post by me sometime ago: http://forums.webwiz.net/forum_posts.asp?TID=7730 - www.webwiz.net/wwf_forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=7730

I have decided that coding a new forum system from scratch would be a waste of time, there's already many good forums out there, and I would be only wasting my time.

I currently have the Access version running. The db is over 50 meg, 2,000+ registered users, average 170 new posts / day and most forum pages still load in well under 1 second. Searchs take longer of course, anywhere from 1-10 seconds depending on the search.

If you think you'll have a high traffic site I'd go with MS SQL, but if not the Access version works fine.

The speed that access runs at depends allot on the server you site is on.

On fast servers with allot of memory and not allot of sites you can get away with over 100mb Access database.

But as most hosts tend to pack to many sites onto a server, allot of web hosts will not allow databases over 10Mb in size, and there are a few I know (Fasthosts is one) who will suspend your account without warning if you have an access database over 10mb.

So it's worth checking with your hosts first.

If they haven't noticed yet then OK, but be prepared to wake up one morning to find your site not there with a suspension email telling you to upgrade to MS SQL Server at a cost of £300 per year + the VAT!!

They have done this 3 times now to sites I have placed on their servers.

Not entirly sure how they stand now with the Win 2003 servers as it's the abuse department (who you can not talk to) that deals with this type of thing and the technical support guys don't have a clue on these matters.

I try not to use Fasthosts anymore apart from for the odd small site on a reseller account I have as the service is lousy and they try and get extra money out of you for everything.

As been stated, Access performance and dependability depends on the host and how they will work with you on application pooling, etc. Access's main problem is in concurrent connections. If in doubt, start off with MSSQL.

For example, I have a 14.5MB Access database powering my largest forum. 2 days ago it was running a sustained 80-120 active users and rarely dips below 20. Here are the stats as of today:

=======
We have 11507 Forum Members
Avg New Members per day: 50.36 (excluding today)
New Members today (so far): 26 | Yesterday: 40
# of Members Visiting Site Today: 415 (excluding new members)
Launch Date of Site: February 4th, 2004 (228 days of operation)
We have 5259 Posts in 883 Topics in 21 Forum(s)
Avg Posts Per Day: 23.07

This page was generated in 0.6094 seconds.

========

Now, I usually close the forum once every 2 weeks for an hour and compact/repair it. It took about a bit of working with the host to get it stable but our downtime is generally very little. However, always remember this:

Rule #1: You are only as good as your last SUCCESSFUL backup, which means you can recover from a crash.

One of the nice things about using Access is that I can download the database file and manipulate it very easily or zip it up and keep backups very easily. Yes, you can backup MSSQL databases as well, but Access is easy for general users since most people have MS Office and WinZip (or something similar).

I use a combination of an app from www.secondcopy.com and WebDrive to make daily and weekly backups of my databases from my host to my home/office test server. Its a cheap and easy solution. That way, I'm only out 1-2 days at the most. You can also do this with some ftp clients such as CuteFTP Pro but they are kinda limited in the backup functionality.

Again, MSSQL is by far superior in performance and scalability and should be the choice; however, Access can work with a little TLC.

I can vouch for that. They took my Forums off without warning. Then they told me to sort the problem out, but took days to give me FTP access back so I could do it !!!

Hy guys,

Good News for everybody that uses WWF. I'm also a wwf enthusiast. As I had need to migrate to another hosting service that hadn't MS SQL-Server, I decided to face the task of converting it to MySQL . I was using a 7.9 MSSQL version. See it running at my gospel portal in ::FCG:: Fórum Central Gospel - Really, that wasn't a fast and easy conversion, but it is possible !!! Believe enough !!! If you are a wwf enthusiast like me and "need" to be free from MSSQL-Server that's the way!

I've just posted to Borg in order to help in MySQL converting support to WWF version 8. I'm waiting for his answer so that the new WWF may be released at least with MySQL support instructions.
