Subject: Final Year Project

Hi all,

I am returning to college in couple weeks time, entering my final year. For the final year we have to do a project, cleverly named "Final Year Project"! I am studying Business Information Systems. This project must be done by me and must be innovative. I was hoping to do a project using ASP or ASP.net. As yet i do not have a clue what to do the project on.

Do any of ye have any ides of an innovative project that I could for my final year? Somthing different from the norm would be great. Would appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks......

I am open to all suggestions.

I would do an application or anything else that ye may think would be innovative, new, popular and a market out there for it.

What's hot now:

  • Storage
  • Streaming media
  • Superficial bullsh*t security (e.g. Adaware, disk cleaners, etc.)
  • blah blah

There are lots of things to do. Start with a dedicated server though. Or a cluster for more intense stuff.

Define what you are willing/capable of doing. That would help to give recommendations. There are some really smart people here at WWF, but you need to be more explicit for them to help.

I'll go through what I have studied so far and the knowledge I have. I have studied Visual Basic, ASP, HTML, Perl, UNIX, Java, JavaScript, MS Access, Oracle, Networking, Data Communications, Database Management Systems, Accounting, WAP, ASP.NET, Web-Database integration, CSS. Cant really think of anything else. As I have knowledge in all these areas i am willing to incorporate any of these into my project. I have built many websites in my time anbd very familiar of ASP. Previous years there have been alot of web projects, incorporating sending text messages, WAP etc. I have no probelm doing somethin like this but would like to make my project somewhat different and aimed towards the future (make it very modern and up to date) Previous people who have designed websites have done it for auctioneers, video rentals, different systems etc.

If anyone who wants anymore information then post or private message me. Any ideas would really be brilliant.

Online Testing system - build tests that can be taken a variety of ways. Lots of them out there, but all defficient in one way or another considering the various types of tests, methods of scoring, tracking specific questions and students, options for handling results - e.g. throw out high and low, etc., and ways of navigating through the test.

Good web migration tools.

User friendly dns interface.

Thanks very much for all your ideas. Do people think text messaging is something that will be used more in the future? It just that the project i will do i want it to be very future orientated using a technology that will be big in the future. Any ideas of such a technology?

Probably anything beginning with X... XML XSLT etc. etc.

My take on most technology is - just think of something that is just plain silly and then come up with a great marketing campaign. You'll make a mint.

I still can't believe that people spend so much time using SMS - what a waste. Just call the person. Why would I want to spend 10 minutes attempting to "type" into an interface that is NOT designed for text input to get 2 lines?

dpyers' idea on testing is good. There is a serious lack out there. Most of the "learning" solutions I've seen are complete crap. They are designed by programmers with no regard for the learning process. The specifications are given by educators who have zero understanding of technology. MASSIVE gap there to be filled.

For a project though, you are best to focus on 1 simple thing. If you get too broad, you'll fail to produce anything other than the junk already out there. The key today is either mass appeal with little added value or functionality, OR niche with real functionality. You've got to choose.

I send text messages if what I want to say will cost less than if I use a standard call. i.e. If I just wanted to say "Where the hell are you?" then by text it would cost me 10p. If I called and said that then they always charge at least for 1 minute - so if its peak time it could cost 30p

I have a page for people to send text messages to my beeper. No cost per message fee.

here in Norway we use SMS very frequently, and will probably do some more years, but I think maybe MMS will take over for SMS the next couple of years

I regulary use MMS and hardly ever SMS as most of my friends have farily up to date phones. Anyway its getting a little off tpoic now, I don't think he really wants to know how many of us use SMS.

MMS is much more expensive here than SMS

but dang, MMS and SMS notification would be a nice feature (of course, only in selected forums/posts if someone wuld have to pay for it)

not one of my friends cares about mms even if they have it, barely use sms, if you got something to say, call.

Would SMS alerts on a discussion forum be a something for the future or a waste of time for a project as will be outdated quickly?

already exists, basically you just have to buy yourself into msn alerts and have a passport site.

Robust SMS alert systems cost mega-bucks. They are usually for limited purposes, like alerting systems administrators when something goes down or stuff like that. I don't know of anything that is felxible for regular people, but I haven't looked in a while. MSN just seems to... eMeSsy for me...

But I haven't looked at it seriously in about 2 years. Hopefully things are better now.

Hi all,

Anymore innovative ideas? Maybe something to do with the internet, or linked to some company or type of company.

Help Please.

It's pretty simple.

Just ask youself:

  1. What things do I want to do on a computer/device
  2. What can I not do right now OR
  3. What could be done better.

There are billions of things to be done.

e.g. A simple program to securely erase files (very difficult), a program to upload and convert a file to another type, an ActiveX control or Java program to do a complex task like parsing a file...

There are so many gaps out there. GUI is a good place to start. There are so many crappy programs that do simple things in complex ways. Imagination is the key.

Perhaps some pot would help.
