I need some advice because I am interested in purchasing SQL Server 2000 for my computer. I am only going to use it to work with SQL Servers on certain web sites. I will be the only one who will be using it on my computer. Do you recommend Developer Edition, Standard Edition, or something else?

Just get developer edition. you don't need the full blown version for developing scripts.

Right, you get the Dev Edition (same as Enterprise with some license limitations) for $65 at some vendors.

a google for "SQL Server 2000 developer edition" turns up some prices around $40.

Got mine from MS site. IRC, took 2-3 days to get it. Comes with Enterprise Manager which alone is worth the price. Also comes with the Books Online docs for SQL2K and deployment license for any MSDE apps you may develop.

might be able to get it half cheap if you play your bids right... just wait for like 20 seconds left... and make a bid

Just for developing why not MSDE 2000? Or do you need Ent. Man.? There's also some other managers that are free.

Very true, even some listed at the ms msde site such as dbamgr2k - http://www.microsoft.com/sql/msde/partners/default.asp - http://www.microsoft.com/sql/msde/partners/default.asp

But if you're new to MS SQL development, the vast majority of examples illustrating the administrative tasks refer to "this is how it's done in  Enterprise Manager".

Edit: - Useful alternatives are also web based versions of enterprise manager -
ASP.Net Enterprise Manager -    http://www.aspenterprisemanager.com/ - http://www.aspenterprisemanager.com/
And Web Data Administrator - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=C039A798-C57A-419E-ACBC-2A332CB7F959&displaylang=en - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=C03 9A798-C57A-419E-ACBC-2A332CB7F959&displaylang=en

They're freebies, but need to run in a .net app space. I have a localhost site on my pc that runs them, can do admin on remotely hosted servers from it. Also have an install on a regular web site so I can do somethings while I'm away from home. Not as full featured as Enterprise Manager, but not shabby either.

Well MSDE is OK for you little Access replacement, but once you got a DB over 2GB or want to use DTS you ought to go with at least Dev. Edition.

But for just doing development, msde is good. Also - used it to replace a couple of Access/Jet db's for some lan apps - major performance increase.
