Is there anyway to recover 'deleted' pictures on a digital camera?  One of my friends got upset after my mate took a picture of his willy and then deleted all the pictures, and I'm sure theres some software you can get to recover them.

flash memory isn't like a hard drive. it doesn't have a FAT where it just deletes the pointers from... i would think you could safely say that your pictures are history

Actually there is software that will recover the files; however, its not cheap.

A friend of mine had to do this once but darned if I can remember what app he used. Oddly enough it was pics of girlfriend that they BOTH wanted to recover after accidentally erasing. They were "special" to them both..hmmmm.

Of course it has a FAT, how else would you be able to see files on it. I was able to recover files from a Memory Stick (Sony) with Norton Undelete don't know if it'll work with a Flash Card.

It is always possible to recover deleted data from ANY storage medium - even RAM, although that wears down quickly relative to disk storage.

When binary is stored as 1's and 0's, they never quite make it to exactly 1 or 0. More like 0.95, 1.05 or 0.05, etc. By examining the specific device and what is exactly stored, you can determine what is "underneath". This holds true for several deletes.

But, that kind of forensic examination is way beyond the means of probably anyone here, and for us, basically only remains a nice thought...

That being said - secure data deletion requires 39 complex operations to make the data 100% unrecoverable (for hard disks). The only sure way to "delete" data designated "secret" by the DoD is to incinerate the drive.

So, at the end of the day, rest assured that your data can be recovered, but that you'll never be able to afford it

In theory there are ways to delete data so that even the NSA cannot recover it. However, seeing as I don't know anyone in the NSA I am yet to fully test that theory. However, here is a great and FREE open source app to use. I suggest you read through the information at the site as it is quite useful and will help dispel many of the myths by the "advertised" data erasers you see in spam and pop-ups.

[ http://www.heidi.ie/eraser/default.php - Eraser Secure Data Deletion ]

============
Eraser is an advanced security tool (for Windows), which allows you to completely remove sensitive data from your hard drive by overwriting it several times with carefully selected patterns. Works with Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP and DOS.
Eraser is FREE software and its source code is released under GNU General Public License.

The patterns used for overwriting are based on Peter Gutmann's paper http://www.usenix.org/publications/library/proceedings/sec96/full_papers/gutmann/" tppabs="http://www.usenix.org/publications/library/proceedings/sec96/full_papers/gutmann/ - "Secure Deletion of Data from Magnetic and Solid-State Memory" and they are selected to effectively remove magnetic remnants from the hard drive.

Other methods include the one defined in the http://www.dss.mil/isec/nispom.htm" tppabs="http://www.dss.mil/isec/nispom.htm - National Industrial Security Program Operating Manual of the US Department of Defence and overwriting with http://burtleburtle.net/bob/rand/isaacafa.html" tppabs="http://burtleburtle.net/bob/rand/isaacafa.html - pseudorandom data . You can also define your own overwriting methods.
