got and installed my first pentium 4 prescott yesterday..1MB cache 2.8GHz..performs pretty good.. good enough as a living room work station..

but idle temps are too hight.. around 41 -48 C compared to my pervious one which was 2.8GHz Northwood 512KB cache on which idle temps were 31 - 38 C

i havent changed anything else on the system.. it was only the cpu and heat sink swap and it was booted back into windows easily!!

i know prescott's idle high but 10C difference sounds too much!!

the socket 478 version of Prescott have problems like that.. I think the LGA775 (or whatever it's called) is better

i got it for free..it was an exchange with some noob who couldnt get his pc working bcuz he was runnin it in not soo cool enviroment and it kept hittin the 60C limit and shutting down.

im happy with it with all activity at room temp including playing need for speed..however no air conditioner means no need for speed for more than 20min

i think a good over sized copper-aluminum block heat sink will do the job well.. so far it doesnt hit the 60C limit easily in the modreately airconditoned living room!!

Can you not turn off automatic shutdown in the bios?

i has not shutdown yet.. execpt for once but living room is a place where air con is on for most of the day and night so it stays cooler of the time...shut down temp is set to 60C in bios and the pc is doin good even with all the gaming my bro does on it..but with the heat sink fan doin close to 4000 rpm.. it sounds more like a hover craft of\r vacum cleaner

anyway first time in my life ima rig out a good heat sink and slam in on the cpu with some proper support for its weight..basically the whole weight of the heat sink will be on the case with the help of an aluminum arm while the heat sink is well intact to cpu die..

dont ask abt the size of the heat sink. u would rather not belive it..but sure it helps to make is quiet :)

1MB cache helps a lot.. windows and applications starts twice faster now..

i guess north pole has some definate use in future..with all these scotts giving heat like a neuclear reactor core, all companies will want to relocate their data centers to north pole.. thefore estate prices gonna hike up! so reserve ur land now!!
