I don't mean to sound like a spammer or anything, but didn't see an advertising area or anything like it.

If anyone is looking for a place to build a website, webs.kaslwebs.com offers free space kind of like geocities.  It doesn't support asp but does support php.

If this seems too spammy or whatever you call it, just delete and no hard feelings.

The reason I am hosting such a thing is because I am going to start paid hosting soon.  This little free hosting deal  I am working is to get me a little experience with dealing with the hosted community.

All my servers are currently running http://www.advx.org - Mandrake Linux 10.0 ADVX and are a little tricky to configure since there are no wizards like windows servers have - they are all text.  Now they are up and running and things are getting pretty to figure out.

Spam is as Spam does.

That being said... You should list some features of the free web site - e.g. php 4.x, email/# of mail boxes, .htacess, etc. You specified Java - shared VM? - tomcat? -  servelets/jsp's/both?

I have some (v. little) experience of linux. Hav you tried searching sf.net, freshrpms and the mandrake mailing lists for setup tools?
Most hosts do not run on mandrake as it is known to be for newbies and so is a memory hog. I would recommend:

  1. Fedora
  2. Slackware
  3. Debian (this is meant to be the most stable of all linux distros)
If you are looking for stability try freebsd.
Most hosts use Red Hat Enterprise Linux. However this is not free. An almost 100% similar distro based on red hat enterprise linux is avalible. Search google for centos or whitebox linux

As I said, I am learning the Apache Server one step at a time.  As of now, here is the main server info:

Apache-AdvancedExtranetServer/2.0.48 (Mandrake Linux/6mdk) mod_perl/1.99_11 Perl/v5.8.3 mod_ssl/2.0.48 OpenSSL/0.9.7c PHP/4.3.4 Server.

I haven't manually enabled .htaccess files yet, but they may work in default.  If somebody tries and they don't work, just let me know.

The reason I prefer Mandrake as a server is because of the Apache ADVX server, "As the whole Mandrake Linux distribution, this customized version of the Apache web server is compiled with Processor-Specific Optimizations to take advantage of the power of the new processor generation, giving it 5-30% more performance than any other Linux Web Server. For documentation and information on Mandrake Linux, please visit the web site of http://www.mandrakelinux.com/ - Mandrake Linux ."

And for it to be a memory hog, I think not.  I have a Pentium II 300mhz processor with 64 megs of ram running Mandrake and the performance is great (but it is only running text mode, I didn't install the graphical user interface) - even running perl scripts - actually, this is the server running the free webspace at webs.kaslwebs.com.

As far as Mandrake being for newbies, ... well... maybe...  I have a lot of experience with many Linux distro's including Redhat 9.0, Fedora Core 2, Mandrake 10.0, 10.1, Suse 9.1 Pers. and Pro., Debian, Freebsd, and others.  Of course any distro is easy to use if you know the command line - which is a must if you use Linux.

Basically, what I am saying, all distro's are the same in command line - with some differences, but not a whole lot.  Mandrake 10.0 could really only be considered for beginners in the gui - but I don't use it much -  mainly command line.  Also, Mandrake is actually based off of Redhat.

Another good thing of Fedora Core 2 or Mandrake is the 2.6 kernel which is much quicker than that of Debian's 2.2 or 2.4 kernel.  As far as stability, any kernel with an even number - ie. 2.2, 2.4, 2.6 is supposedly pretty stable.  The unstable (beta) kernels are the odds which are 2.3, 2.5, etc.

Perhaps you should list the ones you tried so people don't waste time posting them as recommedations.

Ok. Thanks, I looked. They don't give a free domain or a free subdomain. A person has to buy their own domain either from them or somebody else. I need a free host that gives a free domain or a free subdomain. Thats the purpose of signing up with a Free host. So a person doesn't have to spend money. I'm looking for free host. Not partly free host with catches in the contract. Thanks anyways. Smile

Don't know too much about the details of the free .info domains offered, but you might want to read this thread here : http://forums.webwiz.net/forum_posts.asp?TID=12819 - http://forums.webwiz.net/forum_posts.asp?TID=12 819

Then maybe you could set that up and use with UKFreeHosts : http://www.ukfreehosts.com - http://www.ukfreehosts.com

OR

http://www.ukfreehosts.com/ - http://www.ukfreehosts.com  is not free because they make you give them your personal 'credit card' info before you can sign up. Then they charge a fee on your credit card, then they say they take it off after they charge you. They can charge away with that credit card and do whatever they want. They are not an American Company, which makes it harder to prosecute and get back your credit. A free host means not giving a credit card for payment and not having to buy a domain from them.

I had an account with UKFreehosts in the past and they are a good company. Never one problem with them. They also used to be so generous as to give people one year free using PayPal Subscriptions, but of course people took advantage and then they moved it to 6 months free and yes they probably charge your card then refund to make sure you are not using a Fraudulent card and to verify identity. Many people were abusing their system and that's why this is in place.

If you want a completely no information giving Free ASP Host then all you have to choose from is the list you yourself provided:

http://www.aspfreeserver.com/ - www.aspfreeserver.com   They FTP and give lots of space but I can't get nothing to work after I uploaded my webwizforum.

http://www1.websamba.com/asp_webhosting.asp - http://www1.websamba.com/asp_webhosting.asp  I signed up for an account and log in won't work. I emailed them 2 days ago and haven't heard nothing yet. Wasted time with that one.

http://www.brinkster.com/ - www.brinkster.com   Does not offer FTP. Only browser FTP. It would take me hours just to upload the webwizforum one file at a time. I wasted time signing up there too.

http://www.freewebs.com/ - www.freewebs.com   No FTP. Only browser FTP. Same as brinkster, they make you pay to use FTP. Would take days just to upload webwizforum.

Any other good ones for free? Maybe somebody can help me get http://www.domaindlx.com/ - www.domaindlx.com to work. I like that host. It took me less than 3 minutes to upload the whole webwiz forum and then everything worked perfect on the first try. Except the email.

Any good good Free ASP hosts? Free just until I learn ASP better and get my forum up and running. Thanks. Tongue

And using the above will not give you complete support, but again it is FREE and that's what you get when you are paying nothing.

Basically in hosting you get what you pay for and asking for completely FREE is simply getting just a sample of what ASP Hosting is all about. I was just trying to point you to a host that provides everything on a risk free trial period, but guess you just want to much.

Well I'm done giving my 2 cents in this matter since it seems my post have not helped.

Confused

Just a tip:
Please don't bring back threads that are more than a month old. Wink

Tom,

I'm pretty sure no one appreciates that kind of attitude and rudeness. If you want this thread to get locked, then keep it up...

If you want to come to WWG forums and act maturely then that's fine with me.

Ooooo... KC~! You're so strong and virile~! How manly~!

Wink

[ / Tongue in cheek ]

But seriously Tom, Don't take it that seriously. Huwnet was just pointing out that starting a new thread makes things easier sometimes. Many readers will skip threads they've already "read". You'll get better answers with a focused new thread than from dragging up an old one. I don't think huwnet has the hots for you, and you never know... huwnet might just be a 5'7" blond Marilyn Monroe knockoff bombshell with a DD chest and legs that stretch all the way to Norway...

With that attitude plus your "demands" for an absolutely free web host despite others trying to help you, I'd say you are going to get straight alright....booted straight outta here.Angry

If I were a mod, you'd issue an apology now or /ban to you.

Looks like Tom picked up his posts and went home.
Too bad. If he'd stuck around longer he'd have realized what we all know - that Huwnet is actually a squid.

Multiple tentacles make squid fantastic speed coders.
I never met anyone who was upset by having a squid wink at him.
