It is possible to change msgina.dll from the registry. Are there any open source alternatives that any of you have heard off?

GINA = Graphical Identification and Authentication
It handles the logon/reboot. Some change it for aesthetics or branding, some to disable things like rebooting frrom a kiosk, and hackers just love it to death.

Haven't heard of any open source as the things you'd want to customise are pretty much on a case by case basis.
If you mess with it, make sure you have a good back-out plan.

If you just want to change your logon screen you can change it with http://www.tgtsoft.com/prod_sxp.php and download new logon screens from http://www.themexp.org
