I have been actively configuring and changing my version of the forum (v 7.9) - everything works great, but twice today I couldn't access the forum and eventually received this error:

Error Type: Active Server Pages, ASP 0113 (0x80004005) The maximum amount of time for a script to execute was exceeded. You can change this limit by specifying a new value for the property Server.ScriptTimeout or by changing the value in the IIS administration tools. /forum/default.asp

Have any of you encountered this before? Server tech support denies its their issue. I was actively working on the nav include, skins file, css file, header, footer and default today - could it be something I did that caused the error?

The site is up and running again, all things normal - just would appreciate some insight into the potential cause for the error.

Thanks
Tige

This is common with a shared hosting web environment.

It means that the server is overloaded, or there are sites on the server using to many resources, thus it runs out of memory and runs very slow giving time-out errors.

The problem usually goes away after a few hours when the server resets itself and frees up memory.

If you start getting this problem often and your host won't do anything about it then it's time to change host.

Also if you are using Access and forums database is getting large and you have allot of visitors this will mean your site will require allot of server resources to run and you should consider looking into using MS SQL server.

Perfect... thanks.

I think I will forward this to the server techs who strongly suggested that the issue was with the coding and that for 100 bucks and hour they could fix it for me... what a big pile of push!

MIDesigns, I'm having that very same issue.  My site has recently out grown the capabilities of access and I'm getting a lot of time out errors, exactly as you described.  I really think that your server tech support is right.  It is most likely not a server issue and its probably not a code issue, WWF code is pretty tight.  I've been using WWF for a long time now and I have not come accross a code issue yet.

One way I found to quickly recover from the time out errors was to delete the yourforum.ldb file.  I've found that after deleting that file, the forum starts working again.  The problem is that too many concurrent users are hitting your access db at the same time and access is choking.  I'm seeing the problem when I get around 40 or more users online at the same time.

I'm in the process of converting my access db to SQL but I'm not having very good luck so far.  What I've done is setup up a SQL test forum to work out any conversion bugs.  Once I get it all working then I'll make the switch and I expect that it will run great.  This is a great forum and it would be worth the effort to make the conversion.

Hope that helps.
