Subject: Upgrade from Access to SQL
Date Posted: 13 December 2004 at 2:10pm
I am currently using the access versionof 7.7a. I want to upgrade the database to MS SQL server. How do I upgrade the access files with the new version of the messageboard for SQL Server?

Do I have to upgrade in access first, then upgrade into SQL?
Your help is very much appreciated.

please do a search on this as there are many ways to upgrade to SQL,

regards to updating access 7.7a to 7.9 please check the version history, there are only a few files that require updating, no database work is required, to upgrade to the latest version.

I imported the access database to the SQl Server, and in the admin section, it seems like it is reading the tables, but when I actually go to the forum, the tables don't display and there are no records. What could be the problem?

open the SQL database (with which ever way you do)

and check if the data is there correctly,

you can always delete the content if not correct and select import from datasource.. and select your old Access database and import the data from the old database.

sorry just seen the last part of your post . Did you import or Up size the database to SQL.

IE did you have to create the tables from the MSSQL_Server_Setup.asp file or upsized and then it was there?

I did the normal set-up to add the tables to the SQL Server from the setup file. Then I imported the (did not upsize from access) the data and structure from the SQl Server.

Since that didn't work, I deleted all of the tables and I am re-importing them again through SQL Server and I am awaiting the results as I type.

Experimenting

Also, when I deleted the tables and imported the tables from access, then nothing displayed on the Default.asp page. But when I go through MSSQL_Server_Setup.asp, the pages show, but still does not show the database content.

Also, I noticed in the SQL Enterprise Manager that when I import, there are two sets of Tables: One owned by "dbo" and the other "mochasuite"

Mochasuite is the name of the website domain.

Could this be a clue? I can tell that when the tables are simply owned by "mochasuite," that nothing shows up. But when owned by "dbo" the pages come up, but there is no data. What could I be doing wrong? Are the tables that different in structure that it needs to create a seperate set of tables owned by a different entity? Or is there a way to override and copy over the "dbo" owned tables with the information from the access database?

dbo is best to have as the owner.. try entering a record manually into the database and see if its read in correctly, and also check that the records are in the table.

The tables owned by mochasuite have data in the tables. But the ones with "dbo" do not. Is there a way to transfer the information from the "mochasuite" owned tables to the "dbo" owned tables?

select import and select the other tables details to the import details i think you can send just content not structure.

IE make the tables details for mochasuite the import tables into the dbo ones.

I really am lost here. I don't see a way just to import the data into the tables that are already owned by "dbo." Is there a way to login as the "dbo" instead of the "mochasuite," that way the files "might" override the existing "dbo" tables?

What are the steps in just uploading the data into the "dbo" structure?

I am also going step by step of the process of the "Access to SQL Server - Step by Step" thread, and when it is doing its conversion, on all of the "Drop Table" steps, it is throwing an error. Any possible reasons?

  • I deleted all of the tables again
  • I ran the setup first this time
  • Now I am importing the tables
  • throwing error message on drop steps
