Hi, don't know if anyone can help me on this, but if you register on a forum under a different username, password and email address, can the administrator/webmaster still link you to your old one?

many thanks,  Big smile

Yes,  your IP address is logged so the webmaster can cross reference them

thanks mart. is there any way an ip address can be hidden?

IP address can be shared accross thousands of users, which means that cross referencing can produce results that aren't quite accurate, IP address can also change (when I had 56k the IP seemed to change every 5 minuites).

If someone wanted to hide themselves and change their IP as I understand is illegal at the moment.

Going through a proxy server is not illegal, but if you are using it to piss off a forum administrator it might be

ok, final question: - do web administrators usually bother about someone having several ID's, as long as they are not doing any harm, and is there any sort of law which stops administrators contacting other users on the same IP address and informing them that there are lots of different user names on the address?
eg: man and wife both use same forum, wife logs on as different user to have some fun, will husband find out???   Embarrassed

So... are you looking to cheat on your spouse or are you trying to find out if they are cheating?

If you are trying to pose or pretend to be someone else, that is basicaly a bad thing to do and will not get you anywhere.  Do not do it.

As for your question, as far as I understand each post has the posters IP logged with a message and thats as far as it goes for WWF.  The webmasters however can easily log IP addresses for all actions across their whole site.

Whatever you can do can be logged.

Most forums (including WWF) logs IPs. IIS also logs IPs as well as a lot of other information. A resourceful web master can tell you when you were at his site, what pages you viewed, and what you did at the site. This information is not generally accessible to anyone else other than the site owner.

Now... c'mon... tell tell tell Tongue ~!

Basically just remember that whatever you do on a computer theoretically can be recorded and recalled.  On the Internet, this information can also theoretically be passed on to absolutely anyone.  It's easy to do.
