Topic: Upsizing Access db to SQL

Subject: Upsizing Access db to SQL
Date Posted: 25 March 2003 at 11:52am

I have been having problems with my forum as it keeps 'jamming' the server. (I'm with GH). I feel this might have a problem with the size of the access db and the amount of visitors.

SO I have setup a 'test' forum running on SQL - works perfect, but of course I would like to transfer my current access db to the SQL one.

I have been playing with the MS access upsizing thing over the weekend.

Now on the upsizing wizard, I am now trying using the create 'new database' option. then entering:

63.123.144.6  (SQL server)
and my username and password (as setup in the GearHost iControl panel)

Then it asks which tables to export. I select all of them.

Then I get a whole load of options for table atributes (some already selected) : not sure what to do here.

If I just press next, then it asks if I wish to modify the existing application or make a new one (I dont know what to select here either)

Then I select finish, it says upsizing and then after a few seconds I get the error report saying that Table was skipped or export failed!

Not sure where I am going wrong.

Please help someone.

Thanks

Nathan, Corfu Greece

Not sure, but try going about it from the opposite direction. Import it from SQL Server instead. That should work better.

try using the acces upsizing wizard or export acess DB to CSV and then import it into SQL.. i can gurantee wether your data will be preserved or not...

I am having the same problems. When I import the MDB file To SQl it works successfully if I dont run the msSQL_server_setup.asp file. However if I don't run it, not all the SP's and tables get created. Either way I cant win. Is there anyone that can help me out here?

If you have MS SQL Enterprise Manager, you can do this:

Run the sql setup file and get a valid empty MS SQL database created. Once this is done, right-click on the database, goto "all tasks" and "import data". For the datasource, choose Microsoft Access, then point it to the right db file on your hard drive and enter the appropiate information. Make sure the destination db and tables are right, and then import the data.

i know this is an old topic

but i did a search on google about this

and ive figured it out

you have to choose "no application changes"

this will acctually upload it, since the other options seem to be mearly linking SQL to Access

anyway just thought i might post this incase anyone searchs the forum or its needed
