Can someone please help me out with MX records in DNS. The MX records in the DNS are the SMTP servers that recieve the mail. Therefore in the DNS there are no records of outgoing SMTP servers.

Therefore how do you know if a server you recieve email from is genuine? Confused

Reverse lookup. An expensive operation.

If you receive email from john@doe.com coming from ip 123.123.123.123 then you need to verify that mail.doe.com resolves to 123.123.123.123. If it doesn't, then it may be spam or an improperly configured mail server, which is very common. e.g. If you have web hosting, and use your domain for email, then it is likely that you don't have your own mail server, but a shared one which may identify itself as mail.webhost.com, which you would also need to verify... Grrr... Spammers create so much work for mail administrators... Angry

Interesting. However if you use a mailserver at your webhost then it checks that ip 123.123.123.123 go to mail.host.com but dosen't check to see if it is the correct mailservers for mydomain.com

Maybe if you clarify a bit more, I can give a more focused response.

The short answer is that it is not possible to verify that an email is not genuine because it is possible to send "genuine" email from a non-genuine server. You can only verify that an email is genuine, but this is not an exclusive set. Grrr... Censoreding spammers create far too many problems...
