Hey, I just downloaded and setup Web Wiz on my Windows Server 2003 and I am excited about it.

I only have MSDE version of SQL on this personal Server, How much traffic would it take to slow down my MSDE?

Is there anyone who would guess for me what the average number of people accessing WebWiz forums at the same time causing MSDE Govener to slow down MSDE?

Is the number 10 or more like 40?

thanks,

Clayton

Well the max connections on msde is 32767, you won't really see it slow down much due to the number of connections

The Governor only relates to concurrent transactions, so you can have lots of users but transaction get queued up before the governor.

So If I have 100 users online at the same time am I likely going to run into a problem with the allowed number of concurrent transactions.

I am limited to only MSDE until SQL Server Express comes out, because I am running Server 2003 Web Edition and you can't run SQL Server 2000 standard or enterprise on the Web Edition.

I guess I am just wonedering about the limit of MSDE what kind of traffic is acceptable when desciding on useing MSDE.

First off, unless there is something I have not tried you cannot install MSDE on WEb Edition. If you look at the system requirements it starts at Standard Edition. Either way, if you intend to provide commercial hosting services with MSDE, you are not allowed to do that either by the license. Last, if you have 100 users you may be pushing it at times as during peek request times you may find a dramatic slow down in performance.

I have MSDE installed on Web Edition, you cannot install Standard or Enterprise Edition, microsoft understandably wants you to upgrade Server 2003 to standard or enterprise.
I will not have have commercial hosting with MSDE just a personal website for fun.

Okay, so what about 50 users online? Will that be pushing it? No one is yet to give an estimate about how many users on Web Wiz before I will probably see a slow down in performace.

Does anyone know? or Does anyone run MSDE and can tell me when they have experiences a slow down in performace?

Thanks, so much.

No direct user experience with it on the web, but have used it on a lan with a few hundred users quite sucessfully. IIRC, I read some benchmarks on it and the general consensus was that it tended to perform much better than access for any given application.

The problem with performance forcasts is that they are very application dependent. What and how it's coded can cause a great difference in performance. Changing an sql statement can double performance, or cut it in half. Bottom line is that you don't know until you try it. SFAIK, you may be the first.
