Subject: b4 new post icon problem

I have an issue and brought it up with the other admins at my board and they are having the same issue.

Sometimes when people post new posts, the new post icon doesn't show...just the regular no new post icon shows.

Occassionally it will show up but often it does not!

Any ideas?

<edit>It should be mentioned that on the default page this works opposite...the new post icon will stay there whether there is a new post or not.

It won't show if they have looked at the topic. It will only show the new post incon again once they close their browser and come back to the site later when a new post has been made in that topic.

Why is this?  I know many php boards allow it to show each time a new post is added which is a nice feature.  Is this possible in asp?

It is possible but would mean adding allot of data to a cookie each time a post is looked at, in return this would mean extra processing for the server slowing the forum down and also as all cookies have to do the round trip from web browser to server each time you click a page within the site it will also mean you use allot more bandwidth and also each page on your site will be slower loading.

Which means it should be a mod and not native.

But my forum moves fairly fast and will move much faster in the future and this would be really nice.

Maybe someone can mod it.

Look in the mods forum, but I doubt it as it takes allot of effort and time writing code for free which many people just don't have or have other things to do.
