I've been using OpenOffice 1.0 for quite some time now. Mainly for its spreadsheeting and word processing capabilities. In fact, OpenOffice, Win32Pad, and WordPad have become my foundational text editors (OO 1.0 opened too slow to be worth doing everything in, so I still used WordPad for note-taking, etc.). Anyways, with the near release of 2.0 comes OpenOffice Base, a database application. I've been trying it out using the latest snapshot. It seems pretty good. It can open (and I believe) write to a variety of formats including Access, MySQL, ADO, ODBC, JDBC, dBASE etc. What I'm wondering is the possibility it will become a replacement for those needing a good front-end GUI for designing db's rather than Access. Perhaps even scripts like Web Wiz Guide's? My questions are:
1. What would keep anyone for adopting this open standard based off of free software?
2. One can connect to the OO Base database as easily as Access as long as it uses the usual ADO/JDBC/ODBC protocols?
David.

I've been wondering about the connectivity from say a ASP page using such protocols. I quite like the idea of not having to dip into a lot of money to purchase MS Office suite.

OpenOffice.org seems to be a great app with none of the Microsoft bulk!

I've been using the 2.0 beta codeline for some time now. I actually just downloaded 1.9.95. The Base application is pretty sweet in my unprofessional opinion (I haven't worked with database enough). Sadly, the ODB format at this time does not appear to be ODBC/JDBC/ADO compliant, however since the Base program can access other databases that are, it seems like the move shouldn't be too hard.
Also, I've put in a request for the addition of ODBC/JDBC compatability for the ODB format.
David.
