Subject: Multiple User Groups Workarounds?

I just read in another thread that one of the major new features of Webwiz forums only allows a person to be a member of one group for the purpose of granting forum rights.

One of our major interests in upgrading from our current v6 was to use the groups to facilitate guild members who belong to one gaming group, but not another; effectively giving each branch leader mod rights over their own fiefdom.

For clarity, a quick glance at our forums at http://www.calloffate.com/forum - www.calloffate.com/forum breaks it down pretty quickly.  Each game category really needs its own membership rankings and rights.  In the perfect world, someone who is an officer in AC1 should be able to be a basic member of AC2.

Now, given that Webwiz v7 will *not* do this with user groups, I'm curious if any of you creative/mod types might suggest a workaround?  How would you solve this problem?  I appreciate any input, we really want to make progress using Webwiz upgrades.

Thanks!

Such a feature would require an almost complete re-write of the forum engine, starting almost agin from scratch with the security system and also restructering of the database with new tables etc.

I just posted a Groups mod (or at least the start of one) to do some of what you are looking for.

I think it is odd that this mod is somewhat a simple thing to do.  I had to add one table, and modded a couple others to get this in.  I just started messing with WWGF and did this in about an hour, and someone who is more familiar with the code should be able to do this quickly.

Several Additional things need changed, including the Administrative mailer, and possibly the group listing on posts.

Let me know what you think.

boRg,

Being that I am unemployeed currently, and have a little free time on my hands, I am willing to make these changes to implement better User Groups. (I will end up making a mod myself later if not.)

Everyone else out there.

If you know a good, faster way of doing this, let me know.  Also, if there are any features you would like to see, PM me and let me know for I may like it too .

Here are the features I want in User Groups.

  • A User can Belong to MULTIPLE Groups.
  • Post Group display based upon forum group permissions.
  • Membership join styles: Open, Closed, Hidden.
  • Group Moderators can Mass Email Their Groups.
  • Group Moderators can Approve Requests to join Closed Groups.
  • Group Membership visibility settings (who can see members)
    • Group Members Only or Public

I wonder when v.11 will be out.. Should be perfect by then.
