http://www.richtexteditor.org/ - Web Wiz Rich Text Editor
version 3.0 has been released today. This latest version makes
integration into your own web forms much simpler as well as adding a
‘Paste From Word’ Tool using WordTidy™ Technology.
This new version on the surface, except for the 'Paste from Word'
tool, looks identical to version 2.0, but underneath I have re-written
the code to make it much simpler to integrate the Web Wiz Rich Text
Editor into your own forms.
The latest version allows you to take any HTML textarea and with
just 4 lines of code turn it into a WYSIWYG Editor. Well at least
that's the theory.
You can download the new version at:-
http://www.richtexteditor.org/ - http://www.richtexteditor.org/
An on-line demo version can be seen at:-

I have the same question as dhayfule's. How to upgrade from the existing text editor in my forum to this new text editor
|
Posted By: WebWiz-Bruce
Date Posted: 14 March 2005 at 4:29am
The editor in Web Wiz Forums is totally integrated into the
application, so much so it is actually part of the application rather
than an add-on module, so would be a very difficult task.
Due to forum permissions and having to make other alterations to the
RTE it took me around 12 hours to integrate the Web Wiz RTE version 3
into Web Wiz Forums, having to make a custom version for the forum,
which is why the version number for the web wiz forums version 8 is Web
Wiz RTE version 3.0wwf.
The RTE version 3 is completly different to version 2, and the simplest way is to start again as all files have been changed.

Thanks for the response.
But then I already have launced my Discussion forum, and have gathered many members. Now if I need to upgrade to RTE 3.0, then I will have to again download WWF V.8.0
In that case will I get a chance to upgrade WWF 7.9 to WWF 8.0

WWF version 8 is not yet complete and probally won't be even ready for a beta release for quite some time yet.
For the moment you will have to either live with the current editor in
web wiz forums or, if you are very good with ASP and have allot of time
on your hands, try and integrate version 3 of web wiz RTE into your
copy of web wiz forums.

Any hints from you would be helpful.... just need an idea on where to start and what files to edit or replace.

Just to try and explain simply what to do would require me to write an hour long essay.
If you have to ask where to begin, then simply put, you shouldn't try and attempt it as you don't have the expertise.

i like richtext editor using DIV tags than richtext editor using IFRAME tags
anybody have good idea about it?
DIV tags very easy to use with unicode support
|
Posted By: WebWiz-Bruce
Date Posted: 23 March 2005 at 5:29am
The DIV tag method only works in IE as other browsers require that the
whole page become editable, wjich is why Iframes are used.
The DIV tag or IFrame method shouldn't make any difference to unicode support.
You just need to set the character encoding for the Iframe to unicode.

I've found another problem in RTE 3
Evrebody know that there is ability to save files directly from rte
but this function does not work, if there are characters from 2 codepages, for example: English & Russian
The reason is a FSO using.
I've wroot same function using ADO.Sream method:
Function Write2file(Filename, Content)
Dim objStream Set objStream = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Stream") objStream.Open objStream.Charset = "windows-1251" objStream.WriteText Content Filename = Server.MapPath(Filename) objStream.SaveToFile Filename, 2 objStream.Close Set objStream = Nothing 'Clean up... End Function
Stupid FSO can't convert codepages, exept UTF, but utf is not suitable in eache case
Previously I posted that open files funcition doesn't worked, the reason was Outpost Firewall code blocking, and I can't find a way to reconfigure this application

Excellent job on the RTE as always borg. I've added it in to my own site as part of the many modifications I have made and as it is cross browser compatiable and has some really good options, It is so good that I replaced the RTE I spent a good 18 months working on (on and off) with yours. When I have to replace some of my own work as a fellow coders is decidedly better then thats the biggest compliment I can possibly give.
I'm looking into making a couple of additional features and have had to recode a couple of things in there to make it compatiable with the functions I use, but your code made that extremely simple to do. All I can say there is congratulations, and I wish you all the success for the future .

GrEAT JOB!
I've been doing mini-CMS implementation for years and this is great,
finally a cross browser jobbie thats sensible and straight
forwards and has a little more than the standard implementations.
However Despite being close to perfect it fails me in two aspects,
whether you are interested in this I am not sure as I see the editor as
a by product of the forum product rather than a core project.
Firstly in the interests of tidyness I like to keep as much 3rd party
code away from mine as possible so when new versions come out, I can
install side by side can flick between the two. The code expects
to be in the appropriate folder and I've had to go and fudge all the
urls to absolute
i tried the full image path but i think that only applies to the images...
The other thing I cant apply permissions throught the editor, so
forexample if I wanted two version of the editor say with HTML view and
without, I can only specfy that in the config files and not at the user
(my) level.
I think I've fudged it so that it will work by moving the variables to my page, but again its tweaking all the time
any thoughts would be much appreciated
but the main message is "GREAT WORK"

I did spend the best part of a week trying to develop the RTE to work
with the files in it's own folder, but had so many problems with paths
etc. that I had to give up on it.
As far as the configuration files goes, I've tried to make it as simple
as possible for novices to use the application. This means that for
more advanced set-ups you will have to tweak the code some what.
But it is very difficult trying to make a product that is both simple
to setup and as generic as possible. Sometimes you have to make compromise.
The RTE isn't built as a complete application, but as a base for
tweaking and adding to to build into the persons own site or
application.
For most it is ideal as they don't want to spend months on building an
RTE, as this last version took me 6 months to develop, most of which on
a full-time bases of over 35 hours a week.

Your Editor is awesome - I've looked for months for something like this - and have found lots of others - but this is the best I've seen - most impressive, it's very fast - the only problem I'm having and haven't been able to figure out is the preview function just says "There is nothing to preview". Any ideas? One question I have is, what would I have to do to allow saving to folders below the designated folder - the comments in the code say that all saved files will save at the folder given here, which is true and it works great, but if possible, I'd like to be able to save in sub folders?
Thank you so much for your hard work on this tool. I'm very impressed and will be sending a donation.

Your preview problem you mention could be to do with the names of the
form fields in the page you are integrating the RTE into are
conflicting.
Being able to save to sub folders would require quite a re-write

Ok, then you should say that in the beginning. I am a fairly
observant individual and I can follow instructions. The instructiions
are sadly lacking with this addon. How about a basic, step by step
instruction sheet to install it in the current 7.9?
I downloaded the zip file and unzipped it maintaining its
directory structure to my forum directory, now, the asp page it says I
need to edit doesn't even exist on my server.
The instructions make no sense and I don't like people telling me I'm an idiot when I'm trying to use their software. |
Ok, I feel like an arse. I totally exploded here without reading the
whole thread. Please accept my apology. Apparently I was having a very
bad day. I left my original post in quotes so this post made sense. If
I'm wrong, I'll say I'm wrong.
I'll just wait for Vs. 8, you're right, I don't have the expertise to do this.

If you are reffering to web wiz forums 7.9 then the Web Wiz RTE v3 will
not work without allot of modification due to the permissions system in
the forum and the present RTE is actually part of the forum code.

I have read through the install intructions just to check they are
correct and it doesn't mention any file names, the only file name it
has is an example file name for a file created by yourself (eg.
my_form_page.asp).
This file is not within the RTE zip file as it is an example of a file name you need to create. The line says:-
The web page that contains the HTML textarea you wish to turn into an RTE textarea must
have an .asp extension (eg. my_form_page.asp) |
This line just says that the file (you have cerated) that contains the
form you wish to be changed into the RTE area needs a .asp extension,
and then gives an example name, it's not a real file name.
If this is coursing people confusion then I will remove the example file name from the instructions.

I have re-written the install intructions of the RTE to try and make it simpler to understand.
However, as the creator of the application my inside knowledge of the
application means that any install intructions I write maybe a bit
difficult for some users to understand.
I have asked a few times if someone with less knowledge of the RTE
could write some install instructions for me, but no-one has offered
any help with this.
Anyway, here is what I have as the updated install intructions, if you
have any comments on how I can improve them further please let me know:-
new install instructions wrote:
Integration of Web Wiz Rich Text Editor (RTE)
===========================================================================================
1. Due to problems that image, link, etc. paths can course, the RTE files, and sub folders, need
to be placed in the same folder as contains the web page you wish to include the RTE within.
2. The web page that contains the HTML textarea you wish to turn into an RTE textarea must
have an .asp extension (eg. my_own_form_file.asp (this is an example file name and not a real
file)
3. Your HTML textarea needs to be part of a form if you wish to post the user entered data to
the server. The form must also use the POST method to send the form data to the server.
3. The following onLoad event must be placed into the <body> tag of the page to initialise the
RTE textarea:-
onLoad="initialiseWebWizRTE();"
An exmaple would be:-
<body OnLoad="initialiseWebWizRTE();">
4. The following must be copy and pasted into your web page immediately above the HTML textarea
you wish to turn into an RTE textarea (the HTML textarea can have pre filled content if you wish):-
<%
'Name of the HTML form the textarea is within
strFormName = ""
'ID tag name of HTML textarea being replaced
strTextAreaName = ""
%>
<!-- include the Web Wiz Rich Text Editor -->
<!--#include file="RTE_editor_inc.asp" -->
5. You are almost done, but before you can use the RTE you need to edit a couple of the
lines above you have just copyied and pasted into your web page to initialise the variables
with the name of the HTML form the HTML textarea is within and the ID tag of the HTML textarea.
5.1. Change the 'strFormName' variable shown below to place between the quotes ("") the
name of the form that the HTML textarea is within (eg. strFormName = "myForm"):-
strFormName = ""
If your form doesn't have a name then place name="myForm" within the form tag
5.2. Change the 'strTextAreaName' variable shown below to place between the quotes ("")
the ID name of the HTML
textarea that you wish to turn into the RTE textarea (eg. if the
textarea has ID="myTextarea" you would use strTextAreaName = "myTextarea"):-
strTextAreaName = ""
If your textarea doesn't have an ID then place ID="myTextarea" with the textarea tag
6. Thats it, your new RTE textarea is ready to use :-)
Hopefully the instructions above were not to hard to follow. If you have problems checkout
the free support forum at:-
http://forums.webwiz.net/forum_topics.asp?FID=17
Being the developer, with to much inside knowledge of the application, sometimes it can be hard
to write instructions for beginners to understand, so if you can improve on the above please
drop an email to Web Wiz Guide and let me know. Thanks.

Well, open mouth, insert foot.
I just posted an apology to my original post. I didn't read the entire thread and got mad. That's not your fault.
I do appreciate the extra instructions and I will try again. I think
you are right though, I probably don't have the necessary knowledge to
successfully complete this. I'll probably just wait for it in VS 8.
PS, you can expect my payment for registration shortly. I do think you
have the best forum solution for my needs and I am looking forward to
fully implementing it.

I downloaded and isntalled the demo version of the RTE and I really like the easy integration and the light source code.. but I don't like how it seems to need a lot of other scripts to run basic features.
Do I need ASP Upload to use the upload feature and are there other functions that use external scripts (besides spell check).
Thanks,
James
