Better use a descriptive topic title and also post the error message (friendly http errors off) you are getting otherwise nobody will be able to help you with anything.

What I can think of is that you are using DSN connections, with some web hosts deleting the DB will destroy the DSN connection you have set in the admin panel of your provider. They have to repair the DSN manually then.

(Compacting from the WWF admin panel deletes the original DB)

Thanks... I don't know what happened. I did the compact from the WWF admin panel and it created the backup file just like it said it would. I am able to go directly to the admin page, but when I try to pull up the default.asp for the forum itself I now get an http error 500.... it was working just fine until i did the compact... any other ideas???? I've checked my dsn connections and they verify ok and if it really were a problem with that I don't think the admin page would let me login directly???

Http error 500 means you have still turned on friendly error messages in your browser config.

Turn it off and then post the real error message.

You can not see if the DSN connection is working properly in the admin panel of your web host. It will show the DSNs no matter whether they are working or not.

But the error message will tell us more.

Your error message is this:

Microsoft JET Database Engine error '80040e09'

Cannot update. Database or object is read-only.

/forum/functions/newsbot_for_WWF.asp, line 99

You have not set the proper permissions to the database. I guess you have not put the DB into the folder your host recommends for DBs. That means after your DB was deleted by the compacting process the permissions were removed and the new compacted DB is read-only.

I've reset a db connection for it and checked the permissions and they seem ok... however there is an .ldb file now --- the file is still in the admin/database folder where it has always been.

All my data is still in the db, i wonder if i reupload the db from the original zip and then import my data into that one if that would work?

Nope, does not work. When the DB is locked (and the .ldb file is indicating that) you can not overwrite the DB.

When the .ldb does not automatically disappear then your DB has locked and your host has to reset the DB manually.

Just FYI, I took a copy of a fresh db and imported all the data from my old db, then I reimported the entire admin/database directory back to my web site and this fixed all my permission issues. Just in case this ever happens again, who knows :-)
