I would like to see an option native to wwf that would allow you to show "Most users online was ' ' on :'date' "

And I would like to see it have an admin option to shut it off if need be.

That is a good idea. Ive been trying to think of a good, fast, and easy way to make that as a mod.

I can't see anyway of doing it without adding to the db...which for guys like me who have no way of doing it I figure borg can add it as a standard feature!

Does this option make the forum better?, faster? more stable? I don't think so, It is just funny, just like the blue led's on the cars ( here in Holland) but is has no function.

Please let there be a good basic working Forum version 7  and put all the other fancy stuf in mod's or add on's

Idee how to make this mod: set the active users to on ( SQL only) and add a counting function to a often open page, let is function count the active users and write the result in a file, this file can be included in the footer of the forum.

put the max number in the first line as a asp command, from an other asp file you can easely read this and put it in a goblale var so you only have to read this file when the var is "" or "0"  update the var and the file when the number of user > value var.

Does listing the number of topics in the number of forums make the board better, faster, more stable?  Does displaying the number of members make it better, faster, more stable?

No, you're right!  Yet these are still on the default page because they are relevent to the site, they offer statistics on the board...I think a most users online is relevant and is obviously a statistic.  And if you don't like it or you think it would slow down the forum...then like the active_users page...you wouldn't activate it.

your are right :-)

for me a forum is a tool not a toy, so I don't "like" the stat, but don't activate like the active_users is not an option in the forum config so I have to edit the asp code.

How about this:

boRg, you could have a regular version and an 'advanced' slower version of the board. The regular version would be the most watered down version of the board...the one running now.

The advanced version could be 'customizable'. When clicking on the advanced version link, the user downloads a azipped version of Web Wiz with a lot of different active_users.asp's and (all of the other files). Then there is an install file which when run gives the user a lot of options for the forum. Each option corresponds with a different ASP file for the forum. (Or, instead of having many files, the installer could append/output to the file, making the size of the ZIP smaller).

When the installer is finished with all of the questions about features, it then extracts all of the necessary files into a folder specified by the user. Then the user would install the forum regularly as they would with the normal version.

Granted, this would be hard to code but would accomodate ALL of the users...those in need of special features and those who just want a good forum.
Also, people who develop MODS should be able to add to the installer themselves and a modified version of the installer with added mods could be released every month or so.

boRg, what do you think? Maybe in version 8.0?

Great posting. realy

I wrote things like this http://forums.webwiz.net/forum_posts.asp?TID=1353 - here a couple of days ago and no respose :

I think a forum is just like X-mass tree, you buy (don't forget to donate to -boRg- ) a basic tree, and put in the stuf you like. Some like balls some candles some like it natual.

JHH

option: make a poll of it, basic or dressed up, or is this already done? on the other hand, is -boRg-'s forum so he is the Boss. Maybe the best option is to discus this some some people lets say 8 or 10 max and make a poll later, or not. When asking 1000 people the "way" you got 1000 ansers.

Hans...you must not be using version 7 because it does have the admin feature.   And, deleting aline of code isn't that hard versus having it as a mod and having to edit the db.  See my point?

Massman, the problem with having 2 boards is that the coding wil be very different, so you thought getting support was rough now!

With that said, if there were 2 borgs I would love the idea!  Especially since I'm one of those who can't put in many mods as I can't edit the database.  But since there's only 1 of him (though I'm sure his local pub is thankful for that)  it's taking long enough just getting 1 board out let alone having 2.

Besides, there's much better things he could do, like write a portal for wwg, update the current applications, and hopefully write a Link Directory app!

I think this is very important and would really help Web Wiz Forums! I am sure that many agree...This would make Web Wiz Forums the fisrt forum to give its users the ability to EASILY customize the forum. (Instead of installing single files).

I believe that it is worth the trouble.

A few boards out there offer what's called an easymod program where once it's in place all you would do is to take a mod you like that needs the db to be edited and it will do the editing for you.  You would need to make all the mods easymod compatable but THAT is worth integrating IMO and would be easier to write and code than creating 2 wwf.

Borg has said, it takes thousands and thousands of hours to write the board.  Therefore, logically, we would still be in version 3.5 (1/2 of v7).  Do you have any idea what v3 looked like  (no offense borg!)  but we would all have moved onto a different board!

It would be too difficult for 1 person to maintain 2 programs constantly and only to please some people.

I bet, with borg's consent, the mod group people could get together and create a "wwg lite".  Or perhaps once a version is completely finished he could have the group strip out the extra code for him and call it 'wwg lite'.  Then you might have a case, but for borg, who runs this site, web wiz hosts, and maintaing a social life is enough I'm sure.

But what the hell do I know?

like the first post suggested, why not stick with one forum and have the options switchable as ON and OFF. that way you can customise it to your needs and have it as small or as large as you need, Having multiple forum types just increases the workload on the poor bloke who spends his time writing it!!
