the gentleman who runs the site is retireing...
if his replacement has their own new webspace, is it possible to
transfer all the old posts and posters onto the new board please?

Yes you can but how you do it depends on what database version you are using.
Access or SQL Server?

i think it is SQL...
The version is the "lite" one

If it is the 'Lite' version then it will be Access.
All you need to do is copy all the files across to the new server
including the Access database to keep all members, posts, and settings.
If the person is moving to a paid web host then they should consider
upgrading to the full version as the 'Lite' version is for free web
hosting accounts, to make it compatible with cut down free hosting accounts it has a number of features
disabled, some security features disabled, and less performance.

If you want to transfer data from one MS SQL Server to another, the
best way I have found is to install MS SQL Server on your own machine,
then use the 'Enterprise Manager' that comes with SQL Server to export
the database to your loacl machine then export it from your local
machine to the new SQL Server database.
