Subject: Compatibility between 7.9 and 8.0?

Is there a plan to make v8.0 compatible with v7.9? In other words, if I begin using 7.9 in a present website, is there a focus on the 8.0 development to make the 8.0 database compatible with the 7.9 database?
Also, for those of us about to use 7.9, are there any recomendations to insure compatibility? For example, which of the present MODS is it safe to use (for database compatibility), and which MODS should we simply stay away from (because they will not be compatible with the 8.0 db)?
I'm hoping that, if I purchase a license key for 7.9, that in the future I'll be able to upgrade to 8.0 and not start from scratch, because this compatibility is part of Borg's upgrade strategy.

I am also concerned about this. I'm doing my best to avoid the big question of wh*n but knowing the time invested now will not be wasted is good enough.

regars to MODs that you add,
if you can avoid them then its best to because the mods willl be made different to the way they are coded in V8.
there will be quite a few changes to the database as new permssions for
one thing will be changed.. more fields added to the forum table to
hold the last posters details.
these aren't confirmed in stone but m ost probbabbly will be the case.
and as performace is an issue it will also crate more fields for them..
also more fields within the configuration table... but you need
the words from the big man himself
with regards to upgrading.. i am going to be looking into creating a
Update script for the SQL server version if i get time and -boRg- oKs
that
- i will pm you -boRg- when about it
but i can forsee the problems that may occur,.
i had create d a Upgrade script for my TV Guide
i had a access database file that upgraded theat but also a module
added to the creation wizard for the SQL server that you select upgrade
and it will upgrade iut for you

Boy... am I glad that Scratch asked that question. I had already started work on permissions/groups and admin levels. I think I'll hold off as long as I can.

It's a little hazy understanding what you're trying to write, but can I assume that if I have a v7.9 running, that there will be a method to upgrade to v8.0?
Because I'm still looking for a clear statement on the upgrade development strategy for v8.0. It's important to those of us that want to purchase a license key for comerical use. Is there a design intent for database compatibility?

im not sure how -boRg- is doing the liciencing
i think existing licence keys will work (will have to be confirmed by him)
but for the actual upgrading its self
this depends on the ammount of differences and ease of changing, adding and deleteing certiain things are.
i hope to create a script for V7.9 SQL to V8.x SQL.. but this depends on ammount of time i have to do so

Well, this is an important question. Is there a plan for existing license keys to work?

Well, duh.
Look, it would be realy nice to get answers to these questions instead of just speculation. I really like the Web Wiz Forum, and I need to get something started soon so I'd like to use v7.9, but we're all just totally clueless when it comes to the upgradability of v8.0. Can we use the same license key? You don't know. Is there a plan to allow database compatibility? You don't know.
Hobbyists looking for the latest, cool software that they can use for free don't care about compatibility or licensing, and so they can wait for these answers. But for us professionals supporting commerical sites that pay for our software, and must think six months down the road or we go hungry, these are crucial questions.

Again, as for license, as djair said, it will have to be answered by borg. I realize that commercial applications need to plan in advance but at this stage the product is not even in beta so this may all depend on the final feature set in 8.0. If I look back at previous major version releases the licensing has never been an issue so I am sure Borg makes it as painless as he possibly can.
As for the upgrade, I am sure you will have to replace most files and there is no way for borg to guarantee that mods will work so just assume that they won't and check with the creater to provide an update if necessary. The database upgrade will be doable, I don't think there is a scenario where an upgrade script cannot be written so even if it does not come with the initial shipment of 8.0 I am sure one will be provided somehow.

Look, what about simply reading Borgs update policies? Isn't that what professionals are supposed to do?

If you purchase a license key for version 4,5,6, or 7 it will work for
version 8 (version 4 was the fist version requiring a license key). If you upgrade you shouldn't even need to re-apply it.
Between minor versions (eg. 7.01, 7.5, etc) I keep the database the same.
On major updates, (eg. 7 to 8) I usually make major changes to the
forums engine and to add new features, to support this database changes have
to be made.
I will look into creating an ASP application that will update the
database, or if times an issue ask if someone else can look into
creating one. At the moment it's just a few tables that need altering
and for the SQL Server version, I'm planning on dropping almost all the
old stored procedures and write new ones, this will make updgrading the
Stored Procedures simpler.
Because of time contents I have nothing to do with mods, which are
usually written by 3rd parties, so some mods may work with the next
version others will not. This would be something you would need to
check for with the mod writer nearer the time.
However, I will when I get to a development stage with version 8 that
the core parts are finished I will look into integrating some of the
most popular mods into version 8.
Hope this answers everyone's questions on this subject.

Hey Scratch, I'm in the same boat. I'm trying to build a suitable replacement for O'Reiley WebBoard 4.x and I've decided to go with WebWiz. Unfortunately for me, my need is urgent and I need to deploy something this week but I don't want to waste a bunch of time coding stuff that will be released in the new version.
My solution: I'm using a temp forum that is the basic installation. My 7000 users and 10 moderators will just have to deal with the limitations for now. Once the new version is released, I will create the new forum and use the member database from the temp forum. (Since it is a volatile religious forum, I will likely have a re-confirm of the user agreement but no need to re-register completely.) Once the new code is in place, I will make my modifications. Again, this is so I don't waste time. Based upon what I've read, the data access is going to be much different so I feel it's better to just wait.
My other solution was to either pick another forum or simply modify this one.
RE: the license key, there is an assurance when purchasing the key/s that it includes lifetime upgrades.

sfd19, I asked the question in response to what dj air wrote above. No need for you to get snippy about this.
