Can anyone help me understand this better?  I don't really get it, I've tried looking at lots of examples on the Internet!

Could anyone walk me through

11001 x 01000

Never mind just figured it out

    0110 = 6
    1000 = 8
    ----------
    0000
       0000
      0000
     0110
    ---------
     0110000  = 16+32 = 48

It seems to be a habbit with me that when I post a question after trying to figure it out for ages I instantly understand it and make myself look like a twerp!

I know exactly what you mean. For me, it happens as I am authoring the post. I can't tell you how many times I figured out my own issue while trying to explain what my issue is.

Maybe when you are describing the problem from the begining it helps you subconciously pick out bits of information you missed whilst thinking about it for so long.
